"On entering the Chinese market in 2007, it clearly stated that it would respect Chinese law," Reuters quotes spokesman, Yao Jian, as saying.

So should Google have known about the censorship issues before entering China? In this case Google shouldn't have even started to be involved with China if it didn't like the rules.

What exactly are the consequences if Google just drops its search engine into China and leaves it 100% uncensored. What exactly can China do?

Just curious.

If Google pulls out of China and do not comply with their laws, what exactly could China do to Google apart from huff and puff?
A fine? Good luck with that if they aren't there anymore.
Shut the business down? They already left.
All that's left is sending the triads to whack them...
...oh, hang on, that's actually feasible, Google should comply...

What rules do they have to follow if they're just leaving? It seems like google is mad and they're just gonna leave and say F*** China. What laws are involved in this?

Block all access to google.com. That would kill all of their ad revenues, and China is a big market. Google is messing with the bull and is about to get the horns.

It may take all of China's lawyers to define and put a price on free thought in order to sue Google.
Can't we get all our plastic junk made in another developing country?

Because hackers from China stole their source code. It's not like they are going after hackers in China hardcore.

[citation][nom]hillarymakesmecry[/nom]I'd be irritated if a Chinese company came to the USA and disregarded our rules. I mean, I'm certainly not a fan of censorship but what Google is doing isn't right.[/citation]Chinese companies don't have to come here to disregard our rules. Lead in the paint of your toys. Pet food that kills your pets.

Censorship is wrong, and with Google's "Do no harm" (Though they may arguably be doing harm in other areas) I believe that if they were to comply and censor their search results that it would be to the detriment to the Chinese society. I'm glad they're fighting this, but I don't see any sort of common ground for China and Google.

The Chinese expect everyone ELSE to play by the rules.

Their state-sponsored hacking into the Fortune 500 is beyond reproach. They claim "we know nothing", but they have the lid clamped down so tight in that country that a byte doesn't leave without them knowing. You see, they know what dissidents inside their own country say and do all the time... but not their hackers?

It is so funny to sit here and see people say I would be mad if they were in our country and did not obey the rules but the fact is that Google was obeying the rules. It was China who criminally hacked Google and stole their property! What a bunch of hypocrites to say Google must obey the rules and respect the rules when they don't do any of those things. Look at the facts people! This is like someone breaking in your house stealing your things and then when you alert the authorities they tell you to keep obeying the law and apologize to the thief. China needs to go down for this! Boycott Made in China.

I don't know why people are taking China's side on this. China criminally hacked Google and stole their property and then tells Google to obey the law! What a bunch of hypocrites! Why do people just pretend this is just Google suddenly deciding to go against the law of China for no reason? Google was obeying the law no problem until they were attacked!

Although I disagree with communism, I also disagree with racism. Honestly, when companies from other countries entering US market, isn't that these companies also have to comply US's law? Let's say a country allows public porn but obviously "formal US Law" doesn't allow, US has the right to NOT licensing legal to this company to do business in US??? So what's so wrong with this???

Another example is, let's say if some of the US cars cannot pass the emission tests in some countries in Europe, these European governments disallow them to be sold in these countries, it sounds understandable to all of us.

Then why this Google-China case?!
