I recently reinstalled Windows but my computer crashes when i use photo software or any high demanding graphics applications. So i have turned off the computer manually several times in the last week. I ran chkdsk and it froze at 25% on stage 5, so i turned off the computer after waiting for hours and entered safe mode to run chkdsk, but safe mode also gets stuck, the last thing i see loading at the bottom of the screen says Windows\system32\drivers\crcdisk.sys
Also if i just try to start the computer normally it says chkdsk needs to run so im hoping it doesn’t get stuck in an endless loop.
Pressing any button to cancel it doesn’t work.
I ran HP diagnostics F9 and everything passes, CPU, memory, hard drives, and the boot path. Right now i just restarted the computer regularly and it said chkdsk needs to run so im trying again.

i read sometimes run defrag if this happens but then i read if defrag runs and there are errors defrag will get stuck too

Sounds like your hard drive is dying.
Run health check in it.
Use HDtune health. Post screenshot.

Oh ok.
Go into BIOS and see, if there is an option to enable SMART monitoring.
no theres not. when i shut down the computer it took a while and i got a blue screen. i didnt take a picture it didnt last long and computer restarted., but when it restarted i took pictures of th error.

but first can you tell me if this looks right. In BIOS its showing the primary video adapter as PCI but my card is Nvidia 8600 and is PCI Express x16
The graphics card does show in Device Manager though.
what do you think?

Are there no other settings in BIOS available?
Should be more.

Ah - Sata controller is in RAID mode. That will probably prevent SMART to be shown properly.
But Sata controller mode change usually requires windows reinstall.
Im running desk hi again, i discovered the reason my computer was taking a long time to shut down and getting a blue screen was something to do with. A usb flash i had plugged in, i also unplugged a external hard drive and it shuts down fast now with no blue screen. chkdsk is stuck again right now at 24% on stage 5, this is the verifying free space stage so what could be wrong?
Does that mean my files are okay since stage 4 is verifying file data?

I'd suspect a problem with your hard drives.
Either one of them or both.
But you can't diagnose them properly, because SMART is not available.

Anyway - I'd suggest you replace them. Preferably with an SSD.
Do you know if a SSD would be okay to put into a computer this old HP m9250f?
I read somewhere before sometimes chkdsk cant run because the drive is too fragmented, would i be making things really worse if i tried to defrag and then try chkdsk again after that?
Another important question i read conflicting things some say reinstall Windows if this happens and i read other people say if there is hard drive damage reinstalling Windows wont help.
Please let me know if these things are true. I can reinstall Windows again its no big deal .
And i read that if the flashing light on the front of the computer is still flashing when the chkdsk freezes it means it working and i should wait no matter how long it takes , is that true?

It has sata ports. So sata 2.5"SSD can be installed. Crucial MX500 - for example would be a good fit.

If a drive is physically damaged, then running defrag on it can make it worse.

Obviously you don't want to install windows on a damaged drive. You'll get corrupted windows this way.

Flashing disk activity led means disk activity is happening. Yes.
But obviously you can not wait forever for some infinite process.

If you decide to get a new drive (SSD) and install windows on it, then make sure you change sata controller mode in BIOS to AHCI.
It is currently set to RAID.
Have only single drive connected, while installing windows.
Reconnect other drives only after windows is installed.
Then diagnose them.

Isn’t there another hard drive test free software i can try?
meanwhile i ran HP diagnostic tests again they all pass.
Its weird my computer is very fast and not having any other problems now except chkdsk getting stuck.
here’s a picture of the tests i just ran.

thank you for all your help!

i want to try hard disk sentinel i just downloaded it.
Are you familiar with that?
I also attached a picture of the HP Diagnostic tests, but i guess they dont mean everything is okay.

Try with CrystalDisk info.
May be it can display SMART data.
