I am building my first computer and have some questions about the gpu. I was thinking of getting gtx 1070 so that I could game in 1440p, but the monitors are quite expensive so for now I will just be getting a 1080p monitor. Is it worth getting a gtx 1060 instead since the 1070 would be over kill

Solution
If you wanna save money, go with the 1060. My EVGA 1070 SC (old one) overclocked with Afterburner runs every game I throw at it @1440p 144mhz Gsync with atleast 60fps. CPU is i5 4690k@4.5ghz, 16gb Trident X 2400 memory, 850 evo ssd, 650w ps, msi z97 gaming 5.

For instance BF1 I've had to mess with a ton, but finally have it Ultra locked at 70 max fps and it runs smooth,Doom usually is around 122fps, Andromeda is 60+ etc.

I went with the Dell s2716DG. It ranks up with the best, but needs calibration. You can find them for around +-450 now. Prices are falling for GPUs though, and you can find some 1070s for great prices.

Thanks for your response, this brings up another question what are the differences between different types of the same gpu. So if I bought a cheap ttc 1070 is there much difference

Depends on the settings you want to run.

If you plan on upgrading to a 1440p monitor and want to play on Ultra settings a 1060/1070 won't cut it.

If you're gonna stay at 1080p for a while then I'd still get a 1070 as although it may be a bit more expensive it'll last longer.

With regard to differing versions there's not really much in it. FE versions will have poor cooling whereas an aftermarket version tends to come with better cooling and a small overclock out of the box. You can't go wrong with EVGA.

I think you missed my post about I can run games just fine with a 1070 @ 1440p ultra settings trawetSluaP.

Just don't get a founders card unless you're going to water cool it or you like the sound of a jet taking off.

Depends on the game. The ones you listed aren't very taxing. The Division for example is a completely different beast.

I currently have Doom, BF4, BF1, Mass Effect : Andromeda, Dark Souls 3, Dirt Rally, Nier: Automata, Mafia 3, The Witcher, Battlegrounds, Rainbow 6.

The Witcher and Mass Effect were the ones that would drop below 60, but you can just step back a bit on a couple things and go up.

The Division is a horrible game. It'll still run decent in the 50s.
