I need to purchase a new monitor. Since I use Linux, should I limit my choices to one that supports display port? I read that that HDMI won't work in Linux.

It is not that HDMI won't work in Linux it is that the HDMI Forum is not allowing an open source implementation. So that some HDMI 2.1 features, like VRR via HDMI, won't work on Linux.

I suspect they will come to some agreement at some point, since it is a silly restriction.

So, yes, Display Port would be the way to go if you want to avoid issues. Can't really make any suggestions without knowing how much you have to spend, what resolution you are wanting to use, and what GPU you have to drive it.
