I’m looking to build my first AM5 rig. It’s been a good while since I’ve done a complete overhaul like this and it seems a fair bit has changed.

My main question stems from CL timings. I’ve been doing some reading and am current looking at
the G.Skill Z5 Neo series. There is about a $50 difference between these two:

F5-6000J3636F32GX2-TZ5NRW

and the

F5-6000J3040G32GX2-TZ5NR

From what I can tell, the only difference is the CL timings 30 and 36.

How big of a difference is the reduced timing for the $50 premium?

I’m looking to use it with a B850 board and a 9800x3d I managed to score cheap.

Any and all comments appreciated, this forum is truly a gem.

Tighter timings on a Ryzen platform will net you a little more performance, FPS in your games thought the tight timings aspect isn't just the first number. If you look at the other numbers on the CL30 kit, they're 40, while the CL36 are 36 all around.

I feel like it'll be a toss up. If the timings following the first one are as tight, then yes the $50 would be well worth it.

If you’re going with a 9800X3D I’d go CL30. However I’m not seeing anywhere where 30 is $50 more than 36. If you’re that bothered about price maybe get a cheaper brand, you’re only paying for the branding kit to kit.
Appreciated big man, the CL36 i found on Newegg for $180, vs my local microcenter has the CL30 for $230

Thank you!

Don't buy any CL36 mem from Micron or Samsung, these memories have poor performance difference which is bigger than the difference between the price of Hynix's and Micron's/Samsung's.

The only recommended 6000CL36 mem is those mems which are made up of Changxin's DRAM die. According to vast testing, it outperforms 6000cl30 Hynix A-Die memories when you only enables EXPO, not manually tightening the timing variables, due to it's tight timing preset except CL. Meanwhile, it's been sold at only half the price of the mems using Hynix A die.
