Cleaning up Arctic Silver mess- need advice

Despite my attempts to use a very little amount of AS on my HSF and tbird, I seem to have made a mess. I realized this when I swapped my CoolerMaster for a Volcano II.

I have tried to use qtips and rubbing alcohol to clean it up, but I only seem to be smearing it around.

What I'd like to do is remove every bit of thermal compound and start over again with a much smaller amount. Anyone have any experience cleaning up this mess?

Hey Denver, If you didn't see my response to your question in the other thread then here it is again. Use a dry Q-tip to get all you can off. This takes about 20 minutes. Next use a Q-tip dipped in alchohol to get all that is left. This takes another 20 minutes. You can use a mildly sanded toothpick dipped in alchohol to get the stuff out of the little nooks. If you have alchohol to spare then you can just fill a plastic bowl with it and give the chip a real bath. In the end it's just gonna be a test of patience. Good Luck, Laterz.

A.S. can be removed with anything that breaks down a grease. For example, the detergent that you wash your dishes in. (Here in the U.S. we use Dawn, Joy or Palmolive.) WD-40 and the citrus-based grease cleaners also work well.

I think a piece of open-cell foam cleans better than a cloth, Q-tip or paper towel. (A toothbrush gets into tight spots.) Apply the cleaning fluid to the foam, not directly onto the CPU. Do a final clean with alcohol to remove all other cleaner residue.

Just hold the foam in your hand and add a small amount of gasoline! Gasoline dissolves grease almost instantly! Then immediately start rubbing the cpu-do it quickly before the gasoline evaporates! Let me know the results?
