Ok So I want to clone my HDD to my SSD.

Does the SSD need to be installed inside the laptop? Like in place of the optical drive or can I connect it via USB and sata cable on the outside of the computer.

Solution
Hi

Many SSD & hard drive makers provide Acronis to migrate drives .
These are tied to hard drive / SSD brand

Hirens boot cd has a few options
http://www.hiren.info/pages/bootcd

But going from larger hard drive to smaller drive (SSD )
Makes things difficult

C: partition must be imaged but if D: exists it may be possible to copy files using robocopy, xxcopy or similar programs , or shrink partition using Gparted live Linux cd Or as found on Hirens boot CD

Assuming D: is almost empty but half size of hard drive as found on some laptops such as Toshiba
:
Speed
duplication fastest eSATA, then usb 3.0, then usb 2.0
(FireWire 400/800 is too rare to mention )
