Question Cold Start Crashing

Hello!
This is probably the 7th gaming PC I’ve built, so I’ll try to describe my issue as precisely as possible. When I turn my PC on, it crashes after 1–2 minutes, even if left idle on the login screen. However, using WhoCrashed, it says that the issue is "nvlddmkm NVIDIA Corporation VIDEO_TDR_ERROR." After speaking with NVIDIA, they determined that I could send my 4070 in for a replacement. *still waiting for the replacement*

Currently, I’m using a 2070, but the issue is still there. Interestingly, this problem only happens on the first boot. After the initial crash, Windows runs perfectly fine on the second boot. I even tried staying on the UEFI screen for as long as possible on a first boot after letting the PC sit for 2 days, and guess what? No crashes! This is driving me insane—I have to start my PC twice for it to work properly.

This issue seems to have started when I upgraded from AM4 to AM5, as my 4070 and 2070 both worked flawlessly on the older platform.

Solutions I’ve tried:​

• Fresh install of Windows (used DDU multiple times).
• Enabled full control on user permissions for "nvlddmkm.sys" in System32.
• Reseated RAM (also ran Memtest, and no errors were found).
• Changed GPUs (and cables).

Note: I used a MicroCenter bundle and assumed everything would work correctly.

I have attached the last event before my most recent crash from Event Viewer in the photo.

Specs:​

• CPU: Ryzen 7 7700X (NZXT Kraken cooling)
• Motherboard: Gigabyte B650 Gaming X AX V2
• RAM: 32GB G.Skill Flare X5 Series DDR5-6000 PC5-48000 CL32
• GPU: 4070 (currently using a 2070 as the 4070 is under RMA)

Thanks for your reply! I have two M.2 drives and I have an external SSD I use for doing occasional editing. My main drive is a new Gen 4 Western Digital drive. I previously was using a crucial p3 and decided to rule out any windows errors I would do a clean install on my new gen 4 drive and wipe my old one.

I might add that I found the PC to be very sluggish to boot when I had the external ssd connected to the pc even though my boot order is strictly only Windows Boot Manager. But that problem has seemed to disappear with time.

Boot it up with just the main drive connected. Unplug all the others and test.
