Next thing they should revive is the ZX Spectrum... Maybe put an AMD Bulldozer / Llano top it of with a Radeon 6790 and we have something that WILL OUTCLASS a Commodore 64!! Hehehehe!! As long as they have the same prices... Then, Im buying one!

It's amazing how the Commodore brand has wallowed through failure after failure since they were revived after the 80's. It could have been so simple, they just don't seem to get it. They should have turned it into a simple game console [for tv] with online game shop where games are priced 10-99 cents and the whole system in the range of $100-$140. "The retro game machine, 80.000.000 titles in stock! Now with free SID compatible 16 GB mediaplayer!"

LOL! And the C64/Spectrum flame wars will go on for another generation....

Spectrum fan: "Spectrum has a way more powerful processor!"
Commodore fan : "Smell your fingers and shut up!"

I would have
a) keep it cheap and make it run a C64 emulator on linux
b) make it run flash games.
c) have wireless video
d) make it look like the old c64 😀 which it does already.
e) give it an sdk for kids to develop on. (that sells to the parents.)
f) have all the other linux functionality beneath, like browser.

I would only wish, our days of today, can go back to the times, where Amiga 500 / 2000 / 4000 was reigning supreme, and the game developers were making the best games on the planet, for the people, on this planet.

[citation][nom]maestintaolius[/nom]I'm pretty sure load "*",8,1 was to load off the disk drive, to load off the cassette you just typed load "*"[/citation]

I was reminiscing.

[citation][nom]LordConrad[/nom]I thought the tape was ,9or was ,9 the second diskette drive?[/citation]

The exact line of operative text is not what I remember.
Sitting at a desk with a warm drink...trying to get a script to work ... on a computer that used a composite cable going to a television.

Playing F-15 Strike Eagle, for hours, dropping bombs on triangles...

Early days. Worth remembering.

I think it is pretty neat.
I first learned how to program on the VIC-20 and C64.
I wonder if they they will offer an assembler/debugger program to entice people to learn programing with ease.
That used too be a fun hobby until Microsoft monopolized the software market.

This isn't a true reboot even if the Atom can run circles around the old 6502. I somehow find this whole exercise very disappointing.

So basically $250 for the case/keyboard. That sounds fair for a niche item like this. I can see hipsters buying these for the retro factor. Hell, I'd be tempted if it was ~$100.

I agree with TA152H and others who say this is a joke.

How do PC innards in a C-64 case make this anything substantially quantitative as a C-64?!

By that logic you could call every PC that has a C-64 emulator on it a C-64.

Nostalgia is one thing, but this is just...sad....and stupid.

Too bad the Amiga didn't stick around and offer an alternative to Apple, Microsoft and Linux. It seemed a pretty decent platform/machine. (Never owned one).

Geez... no one on here does anything more than read the article and then go to town, huh?
Well, if you checked the website, the C64 doesn't even come with an OS! It does, however, have a pretty cool initial boot menu that allows multiple Amiga/C64/C128 emulation modes right at start up.
Still not worth the money for what you're getting, but it is cool to see the old logo back flying around.

And for the others:
LOAD"*",8,1
Was for loading off the first disk drive
LOAD"*",9,1 was for the 2nd drive
LOAD"*",7 or LOAD"*" was for the tape drive. You had to use the 7 number if you had a disk drive also installed.

I have soooo many fond memories of my C64 days: Hack BBS'ing (in it's infant stages), disk copying parties, Caveman Ugh-Lympics (LOVED the spouse-throw!), Bard's Tale, Ultima, AD&D games, Defender of the Crown, Necromancer, Wasteland, the list just goes on and on and on....

You know how when Chevy re-released the Camaro recently it had a throwback to the 70's muscle car look while still looking awesome and having a powerful engine under its hood? Maybe they should've done that withe the C64.

Heck, they'd have done just as well re-releasing the original for exorbitant prices if they want to sell this piece of junk.

What junk! This is just one of several attempts to revive the old Commodore brand. Under the direction of Barry Altman (whose bathroom fixtures company currently has an "F" rating from the BBB), it will surely fail just like the rest of them. No one wants to buy an underpowered commodity PC trapped in the old C64 breadbox case. I wish these charlatans out to make a buck from a dead brand would let Commodore rest in peace already. (Anyone remember the Commodore MP3 players? Or the custom built "gaming" PCs? Oh, no? Not surprising.)

Hoenstly I would rather see a remake of the color computer using A 50mhz 6809 type processor that is/or/was currently available.
Now that was a computer and was the most powerful 8 bit computer ever made.
especialy when running OS9.

I still have that old commercial stuck in my head..

"My friends are knockin' down my door! To play my Commodore 64!"

Ahhh, the 80s...

...all comments so far are obviously missing the point here. Unless you were there in the early 80's with the very first model and burnt the midnight oil while coding in Basic or indeed MC then you really cannot understand the point of this re-launch. My future involvement in New Tech' was a direct result of early investigations into this machine and the creative end of coding. Therefore I owe so much to Mr. Commodore for giving me that start in life and it shows when I have to tackle a logical problem today armed with such an early experience. Ask anyone who was there if this not a true fact in their lives. I'm 60 years of age now and command great respect from my co-workers when they all fail to resolve a simple technical issue.
