Just finished with a clean install of XP. Everything is working fine. When I left it alone on it's desktop for 2 hours, she froze solid !!!
Even the 3 finger salute (ctrl-alt-del) will not provoke a reaction. Can't use the "num lock"... That will not light up either.
I'm thinking a dying HDD ???
The guy said he had this problem before too.
Oh, one other thing. I put a new battery in because she's loosing time all the time. And guess what, she's still loosing time. LOL
Thoughts???
Thanks

What are you talking about? Are you OK? What kind of "Compaq" do you have. What kind of battery is that? Are you talking laptop here? Get your thoughts together, dude.

..this is very useful and helpful place for information...

Geee I'm sorry. It is a Desktop, (if it was a laptop I would have said so, I think most would have)
I have narrowed it down to RAM. or mobo.
It's a model 5002US. I think it's about 4 years old.

Why shouldn't PC133 memory work instead of the PC100 that was in their?
I thought they were backwards compatible ????????

Compaq's are horrible when it comes to RAM. 90% of the time you have to have PC100, only a few brands of PC133 work. I would guess motherboard because you changed your battery and it's still losing time. Plus swapping that would probobly mean a complete overhaul, that in itself is a good idea.

"What do you mean I don't pay my bills? Why do you think I'm broke?."

You state "When I left it alone on it's desktop for 2 hours, she froze solid !!!"
It look like your system go to sleep and fail to wake up.
Check Power management properties, Try to change couple setting "Turn off HD", "Standy"...to get... the best rest for her.
