Hey guys n' gals, sorry to start a 2nd similar thread. I had posted days ago asking for help finding RAM compatible with my Dell XPS 8940, and marked it solved as I was pointed in the right direction and was under the assumption I'd be able to handle it on my own.

I'd rather be 100% positive than sorry though, as I've since opened my case up and the RAM I've had my eye on online, looks relatively different and slightly bulkier than the RAM Dell has used.

Long story short...should this be compatible with my Dell XPS 8940?

Are there less fancy, less bulky sticks, of similar quality? Thanks very much again!

Adding to or replacing?

According to Dell the models ship with DDR4-3200 but are limited to 2666 with i3/5 and 2933MHz with i7/9 and here are the configurations that they list as supported:

  • 8 GB, 2 x 4 GB, DDR4, 2666 MHz/2933 MHz, UDIMM, dual-channel
  • 8 GB, 1 x 8 GB, DDR4, 2666 MHz/2933 MHz, UDIMM
  • 16 GB, 2 x 8 GB, DDR4, 2666 MHz/2933 MHz, UDIMM, dual-channel
  • 16 GB, 1 x 16 GB, DDR4, 2666 MHz/2933 MHz, UDIMM
  • 32 GB, 1 x 32 GB, DDR4, 2666 MHz/2933 MHz, UDIMM
  • 32 GB, 2 x 16 GB, DDR4, 2666 MHz/2933 MHz, UDIMM, dual-channel

I will be adding to their RAM if that is a possibility? I'm sorry I'm not great with numbers and stats and what not. I had read that the PC requires DDR4 3200 PC4-25600 RAM ? Googled that, and that was the best option I could find on Amazon (The one I had posted) ...My only worry would be it not fitting in between the 2 quite thin sticks that came with it?

Is adding a completely different company's RAM a bad idea? I see compatible RAM on Dell's site of course, but it's nearly double the price, and doesnt look nearly as wonderful. I am not concerned with it's gorgeousness, I just am under the assumption the Amazon ram has better heat dissipation or something along those lines? I'm new at hardware. Thanks alot for your consideration and time.

I also see your point now, and am trying to get ahold of Dell to no avail.

If they've not listed 4 x 8gb is there a chance that just plain isn't an option? ...There are certainly 2 free slots for ram, but as I said, it looks a bit tight in there.
