Hello,

Thanks for your help. When I click on the start button to enable computerr
browser services. The hard disk make a strange scratching noise and I get
the following error message " Could not start computer browser service on
local computer. Error 1068 The dependency service or group failed to start"
The HD makes the same noise when it is starting the system up which I assume
means that Windows is trting to start the service and failing to do so. Is
there a way to repair this issue?

Why do you need the Computer Browser service running?

Computer Browser service
http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/service411.htm#Computer_Browser

The Computer Browser service depends on the Server service and the
Workstation service. These two services have to be running before the
Computer Browser service can start.

Open Services...
Start | Run | type: services.msc | Click OK |
Scroll down to and double click Server |
Set Startup type to Automatic | Click Apply |
Click the Start button | When the Server service starts,
Click OK | Scroll down to and double click Workstation |
Set Startup type to Automatic | Click Apply |
Click the Start button | When the Workstation service starts,
Click OK | Close Services

If the Workstation service is not listed in Services...

The Client for Microsoft Networks component is actually the Workstation
service.

Network Connections | Right click: Your Connection | Properties | General
tab | Install button | Highlight: Client | Add button | Highlight: Client
for Microsoft Networks | OK | Close

Removing Client for Microsoft Networks Removes Other Services
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;322267

If the Server service is not listed in Services...

This will restore the Server service (lanmanserver).

Start | Run | Type: ncpa.cpl | OK |
Right click Your Connection | Properties |General tab |
Install button | Highlight: Service | Add button |
Highlight: File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks | OK |
Close

Server
[[Used for file and print sharing from your computer or Message Queuing. For
security purposes, you may disable this service if you do not require local
printers and files shared across your network. Connectivity, however, still
exists even on incoming shared network drives. Workstation needs to be
running to connect to another computer that has the files you are looking
for. Note: If you disable File and Print sharing, the Server Service may
disappear from the Services listing. Just enable File and Print sharing
again and the Server Service will return.]]

Thanks for the prompt reply.

I am trying to network two computers through a crossover cable, and I
believe this is the issue. When I run the home networking wizard none of the
setting seem to be retained. Trying to start the "Server" yielded the same
error message. Workstation services were started and seem fine. Would
replacing the file C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs fix the problem?

Look forward to hearing from you!

The error message is actually different when trying to engage server
services. It is:

Error 2001: The specified drive is invalid...

Rebooting unfortunately made no difference. Is it possible file associated
with these services became corrupted, and if so, how would I repair or
restore them?

Thanks for your continued interest!
