Right, this started happening recently - my PC will randomly freeze (no bluescreen- just the last image + 0.3 or so seconds of sound that constantly repeats) - I've checked my MB for blown capacitors- didn't find any- scanned my system for viruses, etc- the problem still persists. Is there a checklist of things I can do to determine the problem?

well there's no way to say for sure but there's a lot of things that could cause a freeze up, to list a few

1. malware/virus
2. outdated drivers
3. driver/software conflicts
4. failing hardware

any of those categories are pretty deep, and checking each one could take days...
I would recommend to update your drivers, make another virus/malware scan, unload all the unneeded processes and check the temperatures. Check the event viewer for any errors/faults.

what is this super anti spyware stuff? never heard of it... have you tried malware bytes, ad-aware, spybot search and destroy.

CPU-Z and HWMonitor to check temperatures
Event Viewer and Device Manager to check any flags windows could have raised
I'm not sure if there is any software that checks for hardware faults, check your bios, it might have built in features for hardware testing...

My original suggestion of a keyboard problem was based on your comment about the recurring sound - does that still happen and what sort of sound is it? Is this only happening when a sound based programme is running?

well, when I work I usually have some video or audio in the background or on my second screen- the sound seems to be the last 0.2-0.3 seconds of that video/audio.

Event Viewer and Device Manager to check any flags windows could have raised
I don't have the Event viewer sorry (Win Xp X64)

sure you do, go to start>Run>EVENTVWR

it seems like it's an occasional freeze up either the CPU is having hicckups or maybe ram is going? in any case, get back to us when you check the temperatures in your machine.

Also, try this, have task manager open on one of the screens, and see when it freezes, which process is eating up the most CPU time (sort it by CPU usage column, so that most intensive process is at the top). Maybe that will point you in the right direction
