Computer has had issues since day one

Hello everyone.
About a year and a half ago (January 2015) i asked all you good folks about advice for building my first PC. Now, ignorant and downright dumb i was, i hadn't read a thing or two about parts before i emptied my child savings account on parts that had been recommended to me.
It was only AFTER building my computer (and dealing with all the issues i've had) that i've learnt the basics about parts etc. I'm no expert, which is why i still would love and appreciate all the advice from you guys.

Here's a thread from back then about SOME of the issues i'd been dealing with.

Now, i managed to fix those issues - until they arrived again. Stubborn i was, i tried to fix the issues myself, eventually just giving up trying. Issues such as too many BSOD's, BIOS on bootup as well as the PC just dying sometimes would leave me near tears, and the reason why I didn't try to fix them anymore, was the fact that I had had all kinds of issues when i first built the PC.

The case i ordered (NZXT Phantom 410) had to be returned TWICE until they finally delivered a case that actually worked. Same thing happened to some other components, if i remember correctly.

Upon finally being able to boot up my PC and actually try it out after all the blood, sweat and tears, i was just happy that it could even turn on - which is why i couldn't be asked to bother with the issues that would arrive every third month or so.

Fast forward to now and i finally have a decent income, which means that i can finally upgrade my PC (the first thing i'm doing is getting a new case, 'cause damn that Phantom 410 has caused me so much grief - i don't get why it has so much acclaim).

I'd love to hear you guys' feedback and ideas about which parts would be good to upgrade first, and which parts to upgrade them to. I'm not trying to say that you guys didn't know what you were talking about as far as the parts for my first build, but something must have gone wrong, since i've had issue upon issue ever since i built it (Windows 10 is one of the biggest reasons why i think - i should have never upgraded to that !! 😛 )

I apologise for the long post, I've just been typing and typing.

Here's my current build:

Of the things i know i'm going to do, is:
- Upgrade my case (I've heard very great things about the Fractal Define R5!)
- Get another stick of ram (Perhaps get new mobo with DDR4? Your thoughts?)
- Get a new monitor? My current monitor is: http://www.p4c.philips.com/cgi-bin/cpindex.pl?ctn=32PFL5606H/12&hlt=Link_Overview&scy=GB&slg=ENG Does it fully utilize my GTX 970?

I'd love to answer all questions, and i'm sorry if i'm missing something. It's been a while since i've been on this forum :)

Thanks in advance guys!

Your monitor is perfectly fine, however 1440p wouldn't be too bad either on a 970, and I would suggest looking into NZXT H440W if you don't feel extreamly like "No NZXT". If you're out for a cool case Thermaltake might be something for you as well but they're quite expensive when it comes to higher models but they have real quality (I have a Thermaltake level 10 GT). Really nice big tower case. Also your CPU is not really something you should upgrade, same with MoBo because you have a really good CPU that will last you long and still perform strong (Unless you want to video edit/render) then I would say upgrade, and if you're upgrading go for LGA 1151 and maybe wait for the new Kaby Lake gen. Also 16GB ram should do it for now, no need to go overkill.

Do you have any suggestions for good monitors?

Is the NZXT H440W better than the Define R5?
I hope you can understand that I'm not the biggest fan of NZXT ;-) I've also heard great things about the phanteks enthoo evolv atx.
Thing is though, that i must have an optical drive for all my cd's and dvds - and i don't think they have it, except the R5.

As far as price goes, I have learned the hard way that i don't want to compromise with quality, as it'll bite me in the long run. So I'm fine with some more expensive suggestions (still with value in mind though!)

Does my MOBO not need upgrade? I've just had so many issues with my system that i've been blaming it on the mobo amongst other things. What could be the reason my computer has all these problems? The PSU? I have a warranty for 5 years i think.

Great to know that my CPU is great, i've read only good things about that CPU :)

Would it hurt to upgrade to 32GB ram? They are quite cheap compared to other parts. Are you saying they're overkill as in they wouldn't do anything, or just very little compared to the price?

Kaby Lake gen? Is that going to replace the i7?

Thanks for the help!

H440 and R5 are both competition in the gaming chassi market but R5 is more stylish, I used to have R3, great case overall.

If you've had so much issue with your MoBo then replacing it could be ideal but your CPU, stick with that one for a while.

Kaby Lake is going to be I7 7700k and so on.

32GB ram would make no difference in gaming at all at this point but for future? Nah by the time 32GB are needed for gaming your PC will need an upgrade entirely.

And don't ask me about monitors, I have 2 budget VX238H because I am not really an expert at that.

Taking your PC for checkup is mostly waste of money, I did it once, they had the PC for 12 days and did nothing when I paid them for BIOS update, a couple of days later after getting my PC back I updated the BIOS myself successfully.

Also a good PSU is EVGA 550W 80+ Gold. 80+ Bronze is also good if 80+ Gold is too expensive.

Regarding your MoBo, strange but yet not surprising. But if you leave it to for a checkup they're most likely going to say that nothing is wrong.

Ah yes, that is what i am worried about too. I've been unable to figure out what the actual problem is though.
Maybe i should use my warranty on the different parts and just have them give me a new PSU, MoBo etc... Is that possible? I guess that's what the warranty's there for.

Some warranty's are different, see what you can do with the ones you have.

Thank you! I hope they will give me a new item, and that it will work! :)

Just ordered a Fractal Define R5 case, and what do you know. It has a huge BUMP on the top.

This is the THIRD case i get which i need to return.

What on earth is wrong with case manufacturers? Lol
