Computer keeps blowing ssds

So My current setup is gigabyte x99 motherboard i7 5930k 32 gig of ballistic memory EVGA 850w psu Samsung 850 pro 512 gig
Secondary is sandisk ultra 2 960

I tried to add another ultra 2 ssd to it and it fried 3-4 months of having it. Finally called sandisk to have replaced and the new one I got fried the second i pressed the power button. So I changed the SATA cable and changed the power cable. New drive came in plugged it all up and turned it on and with my own eyes saw the power side of the ssd spark. Now I know it was plugged in correctly nice and snug. At this point I am thinking the psu is crapping out. Other drives are fine no issue.

What are your guys thoughts?

Is your psu modular? If so are you using the sata power cables provided by the unit?

Modular cables aren't interchangeable and a high chance pin layouts are different between models. Would explain the shorts.

I think I would stop using that power supply until I had it tested, unless I didn't care if anything else in the system went kaput. However, it seems odd that the same power being fed to all your drives, would only kill a single one.

Perhaps Sandisk has a bad batch of drives floating around, or is overly susceptible to out of spec voltages? Perhaps the rest of your drives are on truly separate power rails?

YOu said you changed the SATA power cable....with what?

Did you use one of the cables that came with your PSU, if it is modular? (Throwing in one manufacturer's modular cable into a different PSU *that might use different pinout specs/locations* could be instantaneous disaster. (If it worked a while, clearly not the issue, however)

Yes it is modular (EVGA 850) I had a a Corsair 750 modular that I switched because I went sli and I just wanted some buffer room. Now I may have used cables from that psu.

Modular PSU cables are NOT interchangeable.
That is precisely what blew up those 2 SSD's.

Ok now what about those cable kits that are all different colors that you can switch to? Why would you be able to run those?

You get those for a specific PSU.

Don't feel bad, this has caught many MANY people out and there should be a standard. Identify which cables belong to which psu and lesson learned.

I mean the only good thing is San disk has been replacing for free. Guess the light at the end of the tunnel. I mean they even upgraded me from the ultra 2 to the extreme pro so i can not knock them. Damn well I will probably go buy a new psu just to cover the psu and all cables and ensure those stay with it
