[SOLVED] Computer Motherboard or CPU have failed....What can I replace them with?

Hello,

I have a PC I got built 5 years ago. It was working fine until yesterday when it stoped turning on. I replaced the PSU, but this didn't solve the problem.
It looks like the issue has been traced to the power supply on the PCI part of the motherboard. When that is plugged in, it wont start. When it's unplugged, it starts. Obviously the PCI graphics card isn't getting power, so I don't get a display.

I want to replace the motherboard and cpu, but keep the same components. The board/cpu I have is now discontinued.

You've got DDR4. so any late model AMD or Intel CPU would do.

8 stick is a bit of a problem though, that would limit you to the Intel X platform or AMD's Threadripper. Though given the memory speed, Intel would be preferable. (AMD likes fast memory for the internal I/O fabric speed)

I guess the question is how many cores do you want?

Compatible CPUs around $500, the 12-core has a lot of computing power, but isn't super great at single core speeds. The other two are closer to what you had.

That power supply is a little small for the job? Granted a fairly low power GPU, but the CPUs you are going to be looking at, use a lot of juice.

I think i'm getting that il have to drop to 32GB until I can get a new system.

Im looking for a cheap way to get the computer to open so I can finish off a project.

Also with a new board and chip, will the computer even open, or would I need to start again with the boot disk?

Those two will work.

You might check out the 10400F, it will be a little cheaper.

Well, this is where it gets complicated. You MIGHT be able to just hook everything up to the new board and windows will detect the new devices and install them. But it might not, then yes, you would have to re-install Windows.

Is there any board that wont fit in there? Is there a size that will be problematic with the ports etc?

Might be some EATX boards that wouldn't work, but for the most part it is a standard ATX case.

Port arrangement can differ a little bit, but chances are good you will have cable lengths long enough to handle it. Really have to look closely at where wiring will go to each port (that you actually use) and compare it against the internal openings in the chassis.
