[SOLVED] computer performance degrading

Solution
I take it you've been updating the OS? With iPhones/iPads/Mac's... the older they get & the more updates that get released, the slower it makes the older devices(yet has "performance/bug fixes" for newer models). I would run the Apple Hardware Test/Diagnostics and see if there's any hardware issues. As well as run Disk Utility.

I would also recommend uninstalling any applications you don't use anymore & perform an NVRAM reset: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204063

Also, Macs can get infected these days. I'd also recommend running some virus scans. ESET, Malwarebytes and Kaspersky all have decent anti-virus/malware applications(trial versions also) that you can run. I've seen a few Macs get infected worse then Windows PC's.
