Hey all,
Let me start by saying, I’ve got an ok amount of high end pc building (5-10 built for self and friends.) With that being said I’m definitely not an expert with the nitty gritty parts of a PC, and understanding those sorts of thing. I have done an abundant amount of research about this issue and can’t seem to find a solution or answer that will even remotely work.

Specs:
I9-10850k
MSI RTX 3080 TI
MSI Z490-A Pro (and MSI z490 gaming edge wifi)
32 GB (4x8) Corsair vengeance LPX 3600
900W Antec PSU
Corsair h100i platinum
2x 128gb SSD Raid
Lian li mesh II

Long story short, I have used the Z490 gaming edge wifi mobo for a while, had problems initially putting ram into it, could only boot with ram in slots 1/2 no other combination would work with 3 different sets of ram, and the most recent sticks are directly compatible to the mobo via manufacturer website. Fast forward to today, I swapped the z490 wifi over to the A Pro board as I got it as part of a Newegg bundle with my 3080ti when the shuffle was still in full swing. I did this in hopes that this ram would actually work dual channel, slots 1/3 or 2/4 at least if not let me use all 4 sticks. I go to boot, and see the blinking dram and cpu lights. Swap down to eventually one stick after countless unplug, discharge replug in. Flashed the bios after the initial cmos reset (just being safe taking every precaution) and still, no dice on more than 2 sticks of ram, outside of slots 3/4. Even one stick will not work in slot 1/2. I say all this to say I’ve tried a pretty extensive list of fixes:

  • CMOS reset
  • Bios flash
  • Every possible combination of 1 or 2 sticks of ram.
  • booting on integrated graphics just for giggles
  • reseating CPU
  • untightening/retightening cpu cooler multiple times to make sure pressure is even
  • checked CPU pins shortly with all but a magnifying glass (one of the few things I can still do)
  • 2 different sets of ram on this mobo, 3 sets of ram on the old mobo
  • XPM on and off with ram combinations
The only thing of note I can think of is, there is a 8 pin and 4 pin connector for the CPU, I only have the 8 pin connected since the PSU doesn’t have an extra 8 pin, it was the same way with the other mobo as well.

I’m honestly open to any suggestions, I’ve combed a bunch of forums and threads about what I could possibly do, but I’m lost at this point.
Please if you have any idea or suggestions I’d love to give them a shot, or if I’m SOL and there’s a CPU problem or something that’s obvious that I’m missing please let me know. The more I look into it the more it seems to be a fairly common problem with the Z490 series of boards.
Thanks for reading my book, I’ll update with any news!

Quick update (4/23/2022) Tried a few more things today, there was a post on the intel forums talking about using a ground wire to ensure proper voltage to the CPU and cooler and nothing being out of wack, gave it a shot to no avail. I also tried plugging the 4 pin connector next to the 8 pin on for the CPU, also no luck. I inspected the underside of my processor, and although it has no pins to be bent, there are what I'm assuming to be burn marks (slight discoloration) on 4 of the top cpu pads. I ordered the cheapest LGA 1200 compatible processor I could to test it out on the board to see if this would be the ultimate fix, it'll be here in the morning so, fingers crossed!

When you use one stick of ram have you gone in to bios and set it to default/optimal settings, save, turn off pc, set memory in slot 2/4 and try to boot?
Unfortunately yeah, I spent about 2/3 hours trying different combinations with default, and XMP (with the latest bios flash.) Then tried again after CMOS reset. No dice yet, gonna keep trying anything I can think of and take a microscope/magnifying glass to the cpu socket, since this processor has the flat version of the pins.
