I'm working on a Dell Dimension 4100 and I was putting in some new
RAM, it snapped right in, and I turned the system on for maybe 10 seconds but it wasn't booting, so I turned it off, and checked the Ram,
it was not in properly so I reversed it, and turned the system on, nothing.
Nothing on the monitor, etc. Although the CD ROM was working, the fan was working, etc. but not booting up. I checked the RAM slot and there was no damage, nothing starting burning or anything. The difference here is that the system is not working, and there is no green light on the front of the tower, although it is getting power. I've done this before, once I put the ram in backward, it simply did not register in the system, and I reversed it, and everything was fine. Is there some reason why this time when I reversed it the computer will not work. I took the RAM out and left only the Original RAM in(I was upgrading) and still no boot just power. I reseated everything, checked the connections, blew the computer out with air etc., still nothing. The diagnostic lights are blank. But sometimes when I turn it on 3 lights appear on the keyboard, but then nothing, I can not press num lock and get a green light. The system was running without a firewall for maybe two weeks, is there any chance of a Bios Virus?
If so why would it take place when I was replacing the memory. I know of the possibility that installing the RAM backward could cause a short in the motherboard, but there were not signs of damage to the RAM slot or the memory, what are the chances of that? Also, can a motherboard short out and be rendered useless in less than 30 seconds? I ordered a new motherboard, that's my plan, but I'm skeptical because of the fact that I did this before and nothing happened, I'm concerned of a virus possibility, but it seems remote considering that everythig was fine before I put the RAM in. The computer will not post, what are the causes for that?

yeah, you have to find a screw driver of the right size and snap that heatsink off, then you take the processor out. I don't know much about intel(just speculating, cause dell does intel). but get that heatsink off and take out the processor and put it back on in 10 seconds. see how that works, hope you know how to take off the heatsink properly.
