Hi all,

amateur system builder here. My brother in laws computer wouldn't power on a few days ago so he asked me to take a look at it. When I first tried to turn it on, nothing... then I checked all the connections to the mobo and tried again. SNAP SNAP POP. A few sparks flew from the mobo. I told him to buy a new mobo and power supply. While we were waiting for the new parts, I tested his GPU, and RAM in my machine and both worked fine. I couldnt test his CPU because its AMD and mine is intel. After I installed the new mobo and power supply, the computer turned on, but wouldn't display anything on his monitor.

So my question is, how likely is the CPU the problem?

I tried mutliple GPUs, monitors, and dvi cables and still no picture to any monitor. I would really appreciate any help/advise before I tell him to buy a new CPU.

What are the system components? Any component could have been damaged from such a catastrophic failure. It's also possible a connection was missed or something isn't fully seated on the new motherboard. Have you been through the troubleshooting checklist in the stickies at the top of the forum? That will give you a good way to narrow down what's causing the problem. There's also a link to the checklist in my signature.

What is the model of his new Mobo ?
Also, Did you hear the beeb code sound of the new mobo ( by putting the audio cable from Case to Mobo Audio ) ?
Try to installing the Vga cable in The enternal Mobo card ( Built in ) if found , and be sure you toke off the external Gpu card before this operation to make the bios identify it`s vga card ,

.... sorry for any lang mistakes

Sorry to come off half cocked. I dont have the components here. The troubleshooting tips you linked made me remember that one of the mobo risers was missing and I always thought that wasn't a big deal. now I know differently. also it was very helpful in general.

@Requiem For A dream
His new mobo didnt come with a speaker, and the one from his old mobo fell apart when I pulled it out.
"Try to installing the Vga cable in The enternal Mobo card ( Built in ) if found , and be sure you toke off the external Gpu card before this operation to make the bios identify it`s vga card"
