My wife was trying to encrypt a folder to send and it was grayed out. She followed a few steps she found online to change this and now her computer won't boot up. Safe mode also isn't working. Any ideas? (steps she did are below)

  1. Press Windows Key + R and enter services.msc. Now press Enter or click OK.
  2. When the Services window opens, locate Encrypting File System (EFS) and double-click it to open its properties.
  3. Set the Startup type to Automatic and click Apply and OK to save changes
  4. After doing that, restart your PC and check if the problem is resolved.

I would try a system repair by starting up with an install USB stick and select repair instead of install at the first choice to get to the recovery environment. Then select troubleshoot, advanced options, startup repair.

If that doesn't work, hopefully you practice good data backup.
