Confused about 7900gto

which one? better than that could be 7900 gtx, but it's more expensive :S
 
An ATI x1900gt or x1900xt would give you much more bang for buck. The x1900gt is $200USD and beats the $250USD 7900gt in most benchmarks.

A nVidia 7600gt would even be a better buy (IMO) as far as bang for buck goes.
 
Considering the linked page contains benchmarks, you don't exactly need to be able to read dutch it to understand it........

The benchmarks clearly show the 1900GT miles behind 7900GTO, I don't think we want to bring the GT into this.

Nuff said.

In response to whether the 7900GTO is any good. They are released as a one off set by OEM suppliers. I would imagine to shift some GTX cores with some slower memory. If the site you listed the benchmarks from is reputible, it is even better than I thought.

I bought one yesterday! As my old card broke. They seem to be the best buy at the moment in the high-midrange category. I'm not sure whether I would have bought one if I could have waited for DX10 cards though but I am rather excited about this puchase.

I will post again when I receive it. For UK users I bought the MSI 7900GTO 512Mb on Dabs for £165 (inc. p+p and VAT).

The 7900GTO they show is really a 7950GT. The weak 7950GT they show in the benchmark is a 7950GT cut-down card with only 256MB memory. 90% of the 7950GT cards actually have 512 MB. Maybe they're doing some weird marketing thing over in the EU by calling it a 7900GTO.

You can for around $300. It's called a 7950GT here. Not the half-memory version it shows in his benchmark. You can get that, but most really have 512 MB.

the MSI GTO is a special limited edition, its more or less a GTX, the only difference is the memory clock speed which is 660Mhz instead of 800Mhz.

But the used memory is 1,1ns (which is normally capable of reaching 800Mhz) and on a german hardware forum people have affirmed thats easily overclockable (with Nibitor, Coolbits ...) to stock GTX speeds.

It's very good bang for the buck card, it's available here (in germany) for ~ 230€. The cheapest GTX costs ~370€.

It's a no brainer which card to get ....

1. GTX core @ 650mhz

3. 512mb Memory @ 1.3 Ghz ddr (650mhz) instead of 1.8Ghz ddr (800mhz)

7950GT

1. GT Core @ 550mhz -non overclocked versions / Rumour is though they are using single cores from the 7950GTX2. (7950GT)

I understand that from the benchmarks that the are only using the 256mb version of the 7950GT which is a little misleading but that doesn't mean that the 7900GTO used here is not based upon the GTX core.

However to remind you of the original question. Which is asking why it based at such a low price point.

Examples in the UK. (Including postage and Tax)
7950GT (512mb) £210.
7950GT (256mb) £170.
7900GTO (512mb) £165.

In the benchmarks I have seen (Toms and Anandtech) show the 1900GT barely trailing behind the 7900GT which shows me that $50 I would spend going with the 7900Gt as apposed to the 1900GT isn't worth it. and a 1900XT would be even better. Looking at the GTO, which is clearly different, it maybe worth it, but with DX10 around the corner, I am kinda declined to buy either
 
Looks like they are using the GTX core with GT memory. The thing I find interesting is that the 7900 GTO is usually only 3-4 FPS faster than the 256MB verison of the 7950 GT. With the added 256MB of memory that most 7950GT cards have, it should make up that difference.
They should have benched a 7950GT with 512MB of memory and also a standard 7900 GTX. Why they omitted those, I'm not sure. It would have been helpful to have them.
That being said, it appears like you're getting 7950GT (the real version with 512MB) performance for 45 quid cheaper. Sounds like a good deal. Wish they sold this version in the US. Who says you guys in Europe don't get the good stuff? 🙁
