Connecting Laptop with Monitor

Hello,
I have a compaq laptop and a BENQ monitor. I want to use only BENQ screen and external keyboard/mouse. I am trying to coonect all these three things to my compaq laptop and then want to put this laptop in a shelf.
Is it possible? I can still use the laptop when it screen of the laptop is down. Hope I am clear with my question.

Yes it's possible.

What kind of output does your laptop have? A lot of modern lappy's come with HDMI output, or at the minnimum a VGA port.

You would also have to set your power savings so that when you close your lid - it doesn't shut the laptop off, since you want to put it on a shelf.
