Hey fellas,
I've run into an issue when automatically connecting to matchmaking servers after fiddling around with the "hosts" file located in: C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc
A few games with automatic server selection are having trouble recognising that I live in Melbourne and not South Africa (pic related).

Now, I'm not sure if this is to blame as I've replaced the file with a backup I made. I haven't stuffed about with any other networking outside of ZeroTier One (a virtual Lan program)
Any help would be much appreciated as it's prevented me from playing games that have ping limits to dedicated servers and those who don't allow manual server selection.
Sorry if this thread doesn't belong in here, just trying to fix an issue...

The geolocation stuff is done based on your IP address not anything you set in your machine. Unless you are using a vpn you would think it would at least get the country correct. The software take the ip you connect to the server with and looks it up. These things are really dumb some times. They many times are based off where the ISP is headquartered but lately they have gotten a bit smarter.

The host file changes what server you connect to. This is kinda the reverse, you are trying to force a connection to some location. I think you can actually delete the host file and windows doesn't care. The default file is all comments anyway.

The host file is used to over ride the DNS. Maybe you have something wrong with the dns...

The host file is used to over ride the DNS. Maybe you have something wrong with the dns you are using. I would set your DNS to 1.1.1.1 or 8.8.8.8. In this case these IP are geolocated in mulitple location, kinda violates the rules of duplicating IP addresses but DNS servers seem to do that a lot.

Thanks for the speedy reply, If my year 4 level comprehension is gathering this right, you're saying I should set the DNS to 1.1.1.1 or 8.8.8.8 and delete the hosts file.
