On a 2.4ghz computer, the conversion program says it will take 3.5
hours to convert an avi video into an mpeg. Using the exact same
conversion program on a 1.3ghz computer, the exact same video took 1.5
hours to convert. I'm presuming the default avi decoding codec and/or
the default mpeg encoding codec is different on the 1.3 ghz computer.
Is this logical? Any other ideas of plausible causes? If it is the
codec, how can I determine the default codec being used on the 1.3 ghz
computer and set it to the same on 2.4ghz computer?

I'm using Tmpgenc Xpress. I've reviewed the settings on both computers
and they do appear to be set the same on each. I set them up within 5
minutes of one another.

You didn't say what program you're using, but some encoder settings
can make a big difference in encoding time. Are you sure the program
is set up to encode exactly the same way on both computers?

Another thing that can have a big impact is the amount of RAM in
the systems.

Thanks to all for the replies.

Both machines are intel processors.

Is there a way to identify the default incoder/decoder being used and
to set them?
