Converting .mpg to .avi

I've downloaded a couple of different applications to convert my mpg
files to avi files using the divx 5.1 codec however they all seem to
have the same problem. All the mpg files play in the correct aspect
within my video player and fill out my whole screen in widescreen format
- although when I import them into the convertor the picture gets skewed
in that it's the full height of the screen but the width is somewhat
constricted. Once the files are converted, this effect remains.

What am I doing wrong? Is this even the right group to post in? If it
isn't what is?

TIA :)

What application are you using? I use VDub for MPEG1 and MPEG2 or
VirtualDub-1.4.13-MPEG2-AC3.
