Coolbits Won't Work?

Hi,

I want to install Coolbits and activate the overclocking hardware tab. However, I can't get it to work as advertised. Any help here? I have tried doing it with Coolbits and also manually. To no avail. What am I missing here? I am using the lateset NVidia Windows Lab Certified driver 12.41 on a Geforce2 MX. Is this driver not compatible with the Coolbits implementation? Please advise. Thanks!

You're not the first person to say you've had problems with Coolbits and the 12.41 drivers.
Download GeForce Tweak instead. It seems to work better.

There's an easy way to implement the CoolBits tweak, but you'll need two sets of drivers, like the 12.40's or the 12.60's <i>in addition</i> to the 12.41's.

Extract the 12.41's into one folder. Extract one of the other drivers into a separate folder. Copy the nvcpl.dll and the nvqtwk.dll from the leaked beta driver version into the 12.41 folder, and allow the files to overwrite. Then, reinstall the driver. If you already have the Coobits hack in the Registry, it will be available again ... if not, it will now function correctly when you integrate it into the Registry.

If you are curious, these two files are the Display Properties Extension, and the Taskbar Utility Library, respectively.

The driver will still be listed as WHQL, afterwards.

However, if you would like the GeForce Tweak Utility, as previously mentioned, you'll find it, and several other useful programs on this page: <A HREF="http://www.the-ctrl-alt-del.com/utilities.htm" target="_new">http://www.the-ctrl-alt-del.com/utilities.htm</A>

This site is also an excellent place to locate the latest drivers for your card.

Chow, baby.

Outstanding information!! Thanks! It did work. However, I do have an additional question. When I set the new overclocking frequencies, and if I perform a sleep mode or a hibernate mode, upon a return to the desktop and a check of my overclocking values, they have returned to the default settings. Any reasons why? I do have the check on always apply at windows startup, however, these two modes don't retain the values. Any help here and any workaround? Thanks again!

Hi!

I think tha I'll need more information about your system before I can attempt to troubleshoot that particular problem. What OS are you running, and is your computer using APM, or ACPI? Specs, please?

Some video drivers have incompatibility issues with Power Management features. If you reboot the computer after resuming from Hibernation Mode, are your preferred overclocked settings back to normal?

Are you sure that this happens with <i>both</i> Hibernation and Sleep Mode?

I use Windows ME. I have APCI set in my BIOS. Also, the lack of retaining my overclocking values is the same whether I perform hibernate or standby (i.e. the frequencies are restored to their default values for the card). However, I have not tried rebooting after hibernation to see if my manually changed values do come back. I will attempt that tonight (however, it is doubtful because I seem to remember that the radial for applying the settings at Windows startup was no longer selected either). Please note that there is an article in Tweak3d.net that addresses Geforce2 FAQs. There is an item in there (towards the end of the FAQs) that talks to a particular bug of corruption (which I don't get) upon return from a Monitor power saving mode (which of course both hibernate and standby cause to happen). It says in the article to perform a test that if after a monitor power saving mode return, that if your overclocking values are not restored to their default values (i.e. retained), then you definately don't have the bug (I guess by this definition, I possibly have the bug, huh?). However, they don't describe the bug or any workarounds. What think ye? Here are my specs:

Athlon 900 MHz Thunderbird, Tyan 2390 MB (Via Chipset KT-133), 30 GB WD HD, Plextor 12X10X32X CD-RW/R, Pioneer 16X40X DVD. USR hardware fax modem, NVidia Geforce2 MX (latest leaked driver 12.90, but have had 12.41 and 7.58 (Windows Certified Lab)), SB Live Value, 300 W PS 640 Megs RAM (note: I had to install a Microsoft patch to even get hibernation to work in Windows ME when there is over 192 Megs of RAM. Once I installed the hotfix, hibernation began working like a champ). Maybe this is something I won't be able to resolve if it is a bug with monitor power saving. Any help you could give would be appreciated. Maybe it's not a good idea to overclock my Geforce2 or maybe it's not a good idea to go into hibernation or standby either. I've heard voices arguing both ways. Later!
