Hi

I have recently installed a socket AM2 x2 6000 into my PC, I would like some advice about the temperature readings i am seeing, they are

Idle without cool & quiet 44 c
load without cool & quiet 66 c

Idle with cool & quiet enabled 33 c
Load with cool & quiet enabled 66 c

I am using the supplied heatsink & fan that came with the processor, when I load the system without C&Q enabled it struggles to cool after I have finshed loading the cpu it will sit at the load temperature which concerns me. Can you also advice as to the best CPU cooler to get for the am2 socket that will bring the temperature down. I am using Everest ultimate edition to monitor my PC.

Cheers

Hi

Just a quick update, I checked my bios where I found that the CPU smartfan option was enabled so I changed this & hey presto the temperature change was dramatic using my Arctic freezer pro 64 I now get the following

Core 1 idle - 32c
Core 2 idle - 30c

Load Core 1 - 42c
Load Core 2 - 40c

Pretty impressive I thought, the noise from the fan is more noticeable but nothing drastic. I have been using the X2 6000 for 10 days now & it is an impressive processor, I know against higher end C2Ds it loses out on most benchmarks, but if you have a Socket AM2 set up considering that I paid £140 at Ebuyer it is an awsome chip. It will more than handle what most users can throw at it. It encodes a 700mb divx file in around 30mins & on FEARs system test utility it averages 189fps & max was 309fps I know the graphics card plays a big part in this. Also ran a virus scan & played COD2 at the same time & it never flinched once.

AMD x 2 6000 might not be the best chip around but it's certainly a very decent CPU there is no questions about it.

Well, I find you more entertaining than just 1 star. Although recommending that most folks pry off the heat spreader on their cpu is a bit extreme... The issue of Intel vs. AMD will always come down to a matter of price/performance. Those with the most $$$ will choose one, those on a budget have a choice. Which one depends on what year it is. It's always been that way...

Absolutely.
I usually recommend Intel these days, but budget and carryover parts play an important factor. The recent HUGE price cuts on AMD cpus make them a great budget buy IF no overclocking is considered.
In any event, as no fanboy, here's my current (very modest) rig:

Antec TX1088 AMG Tower w/ TP480 psu
Panaflo fans @ 7 volts
Tripp-Lite LC1200 Line Conditioner
AMD 939 X2 3800+
Asus A8N-VM CSM
Foxconn 7600GS/256MB
2GB Corsair XMS DDR400
Seagate ST3160827AS 160GB SATA
Maxtor 6L100M0 100GB SATA
Asus E616A DVD-R
Plextor PX716A DVD-RW
NEC Floppy
Targus PAKB010u Keys
Logitech G5 Laser Mouse
Logitech Cordless Rumblepad2
ViewSonic VX2235WMB LCD Monitor
Onkyo TX8222
AR ARXP62 Speakers

As you can see, I'm not stretching the envelope here. This old build does all I need it to do, runs at stock speed, and is very quiet.
