Do i have to use a cooling paste with my heatsink and fan? I have a Duron 800mhz and Elite K7 mother board. What will happen if i do run it? thanks for your help

what are you overclocking to? If you do plan to overclock and are serious about it then you should take every step to keep the cpu as cool as you can.

There's a >90% chance you will smoke (read: convert to the liquid phase) your cpu, which will prevent using your computer until you order/purchase a new cpu. Air is an outstanding insulator compared with other gasses/materials.

Will it be OK to just run it at its intended speed (800mhz) and not go any further than the BIOS mode, ie to see if it works and there are'nt any problems

I now realise that it has cooloing paste on the heatsink/fan, i peeled off a strip of protective film when i put it on. I thought that i was supossed to cover the whole CPU in the stuff not just the center chip. Thanks for everyones help.

The center chip IS the whole CPU, the rest of the thing just breaks out the signals for insertion into the MB. It would be a nightmare to try routing that many signals into the little space the CPU takes up so they spread them out.

It must be thermal paste as its now running stablily and with the recomended temperatures
thanks all
