I'm about to upgrade my PC and need some advice. I have a tight budget, so thats the best ones i can get

1)Core i3 2100 3.1 Ghz for 125$

2)Core i5 750 2.66 Ghz for 140$ (I'm getting this from one of my friend)

I'm not a hardcore gamer :), I just want my games to play well(30+ fps max settings)

My current specs are:
C2d E7500 @ 3.3Ghz
Cooler Master Hyper N520
Asus P5KPL-AM SE Mobo
2x2 GB Corsair Ram
Nvidia GTX 550 Ti
Corsair HX650W PSU
LG 20" LED @ 1600x900

there is a huge difference between amd's cores and intel's cores ... they arent comparable.
I'd say neither since your on a tight budget and you would have to buy a new motherboard for either of those processors, and also, you do realize that those 2 cpu's use different sockets right? If you are dead set on going with one of them, the i5 is better because it's a quad core very overclockable and has a huge cache, but it's also on an all but dead platform. The i3 is a pretty good cpu, but it probably wouldn't be worth to buy a new mb and that cpu because you wouldn't gain all that much over your current setup. You'd be better off just saving your dough to upgrade later on.

Well, a few things to consider:

Either one will require a new motherboard (your LGA775 board won't support LGA 1155/1156 chips). You also need new RAM (the new sockets use DDR3, so the DDR2 you have won't work). These need to be included in your "tight" budget.

Second thing to consider - yes, the core i5 750 is probably a better proc. BUT it requires buying an LGA 1156 board, which is basically a dead socket with no upgrade path. Core i3 2100 offers the LGA 1155 socket, which can be upgraded to the Core i5 2500k or Core i7 2600k. Core i3 is also Sandy Bridge and offers the awesome Z68 platform.

So it depends - do you see yourself wanting to upgrade again in the next couple years? If so, then get the i3. If you think the i5 will do you for a number of years, then go to the i5. but make sure either way you factor in MOBO and RAM (and time to reformat and reinstall OS with the new mobo).

Have you looked at any motherboards and ram to go with the two cpu's ? If you get the i5-750 then you need a socket 1156 motherboard and ddr3 dual channel ram. If you get the i3 2100 then you need a 1155 socket motherboard and ddr3 dual channel ram. With the 1155 socket you would be able to upgrade later on to a better sandy bridge cpu if you wanted.

Yea i will keep this PC for next two years. Btw my total budget is 300$ for Proc + Mobo + Ram

I'm considering these two alternatives

Core i3 2100 125$
Asus P8H67-MLE B3 115$
Corsair XMS3 8Gb 55$
Total 295$

Core i5 750 140$
Intel DH55HC 95$
Corsair XMS3 8Gb 55$
Total 290$

Now one thing i'm concerned about is i3 2100 is not a true quad i5 750 is, and newer titles like metro 2033, witcher 2, BF3 needs a quad core proc to play well. My E7500 barely manages to play them. Do you think i3's newer 32nm architecture and HT will manage these newer titles?

My E7500 is not cutting it anymore, i recently upgraded from a GTS 250 to GTX 550 and feel no difference in fps actually performance is even slower than 250. So should i wait and save more for 2nd gen i5 or should i go with i3 2100 now?

Currently i'm more inclined towards i3 2100 since 1156 is a dead socket but again, i5 750 has its own advantages i mean 4 cores, bigger cache, overclocking.

Still the i3 2100 is better option.Save some money for a later upgrade.

Ok so if I buy the i3 now and later i want to upgrade to i5 2500K can i OC it on this H67 asus board?

not familiar with the h67 boards but i would assume you could. I have a h55 board and a corei5 760 and i have mine oc'd to 4ghz. Again i cant say for sure but i don't see why you wouldn't be able too. As for your processor i would also go with sandy bridge but i would just save a couple bucks more and go with the i5 2500k if your going to be gaming! for most new high end games as well as future games u really do require a quad core to run well with acceptable frame rates at higher graphic settings. that being said if all you want to do is play older games or newer games on lower settings then a dual core would be just fine.

yeah i'm thinking to go with i3 2100 and z68 mobo from intel but i'll have to settle for 4Gb DDR3 then🙁
