Hi,

I intend on building an itx gaming system. I want a good quality cheap PSU. I was going to buy a corsair builder series cx500w psu, but although it gets great reviews i remember hearing that they aren't amazing quality. Anyone want to clarify this for me and/or suggest a good value alternative if necessary?
Cheers.

Solution
They use cheap capacitors that have a high failure rate. They look great out of the box which is why they reviewed so well. But after a few months, a heavy load, or hot environment the problems start. Look at the XFX TS 550w for a good budget unit, they go on sale all the time for $50.

CX are good enough if you use them properly. I wouldn't cram one into a small box though.

It would also be highly dependent on your other components. If you wanted to build an overclocking system with a high end GPU the CX series would be a bad choice.

If you are going for efficiency with a non-overclocking CPU for an HTPC with a low wattage GPU, then it is a decent choice.
