Corsair H110i GTX Cooler + I7 4790K - HIGH TEMPS!!! HELP PLEASE!

Hello to all, this my first time posting, and I am grateful for any help.

Problem:
High temperatures for Corsair H110i GTX with I7 4790K (Stock, non overclocked).

Specs:

CPU: I7 4790K (Stock 4.0 Turbos up to 4.5Ghz)
Cooler: Corsair H110i GTX 280mm
MB: Asus Maximus Vii Hero Motherboard
RAM: 16GB (8GB x 2) of Kingston HyperX Savage at 2400mhz
GPU: Asus Strix GTX 980 Ti OC
PSU: EVGA 850W Gold
Storage: Samsung Evo 240 GB SSD + WD Black HDD 2 TB



I've always had idle temperatures of around 34 degrees Celsius with my old Noctua NH-U12S air cooler and load temperatures of 59-65 degrees Celsius when playing Crysis 3.

However, after installing my new Corsair H110i GTX, the idle temps are similar and even higher up to 36 or 40 compared to that of the Noctua and the load temp while playing Crysis 3 are 70-75 degrees Celsius....

I ran Aida64 system stability test for 30 minutes and for my 4 cores' max temp,
I am got 78, 85, 83, 79.....seems really high for a cooler of this caliber.

Do I have a faulty cooler? Or what could be the problem?

PLEASE HELP a NOOB through this pain....😱

Those temps are pretty high, even the noctue load temps are up there (i get 60-70C under load with a stock cooler on an 4690k).How did you apply the thermal paste and how much did you use?

Thanks for the quick reply. I think I did the pea size method with noctua 2 years ago. It was with the noctua paste though.

For the New H110i GTX I just installed, I used the stock paste that was pre applied on the cooler.

I am wondering if I over tightened the screws around the part that sits on the cpu maybe? This is my first time using a water cooler for myself

But I have installed two Corsair H60s for 2 friends and they both got lower temps in the mid-high 20s....so I knew something was definitely wrong with my unit.

you might have overtightened(or tightened it too little) it, you should be getting around mid 20s in idle and around 50 undel load.
Its also possible your motherboard has some sort of automatic oc tool which is increasing your voltage unecesarily

I just unscrewed the whole thing and took a look at the thermal paste....it seems like there's a big chunk that's not really being covered much on the upper left area. Screwed it back....this time carefully not to over tighten....same results.

Not sure of what I should do.....Clean the paste off completely from the water cooler and CPU? B

Buy another paste? (If so what brand?) Reapply paste and go from there?

Or call Corsair? or Return it(Bought it from Amazon).

Now that you have taken off the cooler and replied it you dont have much choice, you have to clean off the thermal paste you have and reaplly it.
If there was something wrong with the unit (pump not working) your temps would be worse than they are now.You do have everythin the fans and the pumps plugged into the mobo right?

T_T, ya I am ordering Artic Silver MX 4 paste right now....And YUP everything is working correctly and all things plugged.

Corsair Links detects fans and pump. So I am thinking it's the paste problem? not sure....
I've installed 2 Corsair H60 for my friends, and it was always an easy installation and cool temp performance....maybe water cooling hates me. T_T

Like just opposite corners first so it has a foundation. So after seating, put on the top left and bottom right and make them tight, and then do the other two. The screws don't have to be overly tight. I would say hand tightening is fine. Maybe a little tweak with a screwdriver if it is hard to reach because of the tubing.

He means you should tighten the opposite corners first eg. tope left and bottom right then top right and bottom left. This is done so the paste spreads evenly

I cleaned everything and reapplied with the new paste....Still the same bad temps...
Should I return it on Amazon and get a new one?

I did get a new Cooler, and used the Artic MX4 Paste.

Am getting around on average during Idle: 29 34 30 29 for the four cores....I guess that's acceptable?
Lowest TEMPS on Idle is 26 30 29 27.

Under Load, the 4 Cores are usually:
54 57 48 42

The Minimum for my computer as of now is:
28 30 28 26

The Maximum is:
67 70 69 66


How do these numbers look to you?

I was wondering if it's possible to overclock to like 4.5 or 4.6ghz.
The 4790K already turbos up to 4.4ghz

54 57 48 42 C and 28 30 28 26 looks about right for a stock cooler with a 4790k and the maximum you got arent that bad either.
You can easily overclock to 4.6 on that cooler, know that it will void your warranty, BUT there is really no way for intel to tell unless you do something stupid like run a lot of vattage through it causing physical damage

Just want to add another inquiry here. I do have the same AIO cooler, Corsair H110i GTX althoug my processor is a 5930K.

I used to have the same CPU, 4790K and the H110i is able to cool this processor Overclocked at 4.7ghz, 1.275v (at least on my chip.

when I replaced it (the 4790K) with the 5930K, the cooler is having a hard time cooling this one at 1.25v to 1.30v. the temps I am getting:

- idle is 45-50 degrees celsius but this I understand and not concerned;
- up to 75 degrees celsius on games, and;
- 95+ degrees on stress tests/benchmarks (Cinebench, Intel XTU)

I've done the following but still the same:

- checked to see if pump is not malfunctioning and it's stable at 3000+ rpm
- checked to see if fans are good and they're spinning at 800-1300rpm
- case fans (intake and exhausts) are delivering cool and pushing warm air properly (20-25 degrees Celsius ambient)
- re-applying thermal paste (Noctua), re-seating the H110i pump; made certain it's properly installed;
- replaced thermal paste (Arctic MX-4), re-seat pump, made certain it's properly installed;

I understand that the 5930K is 140 watts TDP (about 50 watts more than 4790K).
With that said....is my situation normal? My H110i GTX can cool my 4790K @ 4.7ghz, 1.275v fine but having a challenge on my 5930K @ 4.5ghz, 1.250v (and up)?

In the meantime, I just lower the Overclock on my 5930K @ 4.4ghz, 1.175v running stable and cooler.

You should see three of the four bars are bigger than the thin one (*top*), which will be notched out. These two notches are in line with the protruding pins on the motherboard socket assembly (aka the back plate) of the motherboard. When these pins come in contact with the back plate Corsair includes they will not provide a flat surface and will cause your pump unit to not be level on your cpu and will have poor contact.

How do I know this? you might be asking well I have done the same and couldn't figure out what the problem was until one day I spiked up to +90 deg Celsius and powered down and performed an inspection. THIS CAN DAMAGE YOUR CPU so if you have erratic idle temps and your h110 temps seem fine you aren't contacting the cpu spreader properly, when installed properly the temps on the h110 should follow the CPU group fairly closely and under 100% load on a 4790k I seem to max out at 60 deg C. I really think that Corsair should provide a warning sticker with the back plate because it is fairly difficult to notice that the back plate is directional. and whilst playing around to get the adjustable holes lined up it is fairly easy to install the plate in the wrong direction.
