Is Corsair 950w too big for:

i7 960 oc 10%, ATI 9870 card, 6g ddr3 1600, Asus PT6 X58 mb, 1tb internal hd, 1tb external hd, blue ray player, dual layer DVD burner, 5.1 speakers, printer, wireless router, cable modem, saitek cyborg keyboard, razor deathadder mouse and external usb hub.

I can downgrade to corsair tx 650, 750 or 850

Please advise

Your current system - a 650 W - QUALITY PSU will work. Your Power consumption at max load should be less than 500 Watts, at Idle no more than 350 Watts (My est are probably on the high side.

That said, you can ignore the external HHD (Most have their own brick. Speakers also either use a brick, or are low power. Can also ignore router, cable modem, keyboard, mouse and usb hub.

Primary power consumption is GPU, CPU and memory and MB.

Question is do you plan on adding a 2nd GPU (ie xfire)?? If so add a extra 150 Watts.

Normally what I do is estimate Max power and add 25 % and then go for Quality over size. A 650 (for single GPU) or a 750 Watt (for 2 GPUs), High quality is by far better than a 1000 W poor quality PSU.

As an estimate, I have a E6400 OCed to 3.2 GHz, 4 HDDs, an Blu-ray writer and a DVD writer, 4 Gig of Ram and a 4870 GPU on a 965-DQ6 MB. My max power, at the wall socket is only approx 325 W.

Here is a eval of a 5870 card, the 5890 is going to be higher

Thx

Already ordered build with the Cosair TX 950w (non modular). Plan on adding 2nd Video card down the road and I will have peace of mind with this unit. Almost got HX 1000 but, couldn't get Cyber power to lower price they already threw in shipping.
