Here's the wishlist: http://secure.newegg.com/WishList/PublicWishDetail.aspx?WishListNumber=20859427

Any recommendations for slicing the price to the bare minimum, without completely changing the rig? I don't care about an SSd, so please don't tell me I need one. The PSU has a high wattage in order to future-proof it (for SLI and whatnot), but I can cut that back to the recommended for just one GPU, and I'll change it when upgrade time comes.

Also, I know the glaring unnecessary expense here is the 3D monitor, but dammit, it looks so cool! After playing DNF in 3D at the Gearbox Community Day, I can only imagine how other, better games can utilize it. But if you can find a cheaper 3D monitor between 18 and 27 inches, I'm game. :D

The eGo external drive is for backups, BTW.

My suggestions are to:
1) Switch to P67 or a sub $150 Z68
2) Get the Core i5-2500k instead unless you're working with design/3D rendering
3) Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB 7200 is where your money should be man ;)
4) You will do fine with the 1600.. 8GB is good enough
5) If you're getting a 1200W PSU, I hope you will be using your 580 as SLI in the future

+1

Also drop down to a $500 580...no need for a 3gb card for a single monitor that runs @ 1920 x 1080 and for a psu look at the 900w Lepa (made by Enermax) for $180, or the Enermax 1020w for $210 or the Corsair HX1050 for $230. Any of those psu's will run dual 580's and they are modular.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824014241 <----- Probably the best 3D monitor on the market atm. LED, 2ms, etc... it has it all.

Get 2 Seagate Barracuda ST31000524AS 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive-59.99/ea 119.98 total
Unless you absolutely have to have the 2tb model cause you have that much to store.

Also 2x G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1866 (PC3 14900) Desktop Memory Model F3-14900CL9D-8GBXL-79.99
Anything over 8gb is overkill and this saves you $90 right here. 1600mhz is perfect for Sandy Bridge but faster is better to some degree too.

get something more like this for the MOBO and CPU to bring it down a little more Intel Core i5-2500K, ASUS P8Z68-V PRO LGA 1155 Intel Z68 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard with UEFI BIOS -409.98 (-$20 for combo)
this save you another 165
or
Intel Core i7 2600k, ASUS P8Z68-V PRO LGA 1155 Intel Z68 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard with UEFI BIOS - 504.98
This save you 70

Other than that I agree with wintermint in that you can substitute the 2600k for the 2500k unless you are doing a lot of 3d rendering (ie 3dCad and such) and that anything over 8gb ram is overkill. And I am coming up with you being fine in sli with the 580's at 1000 watt PSU

So just by going with the 2500k build you could save $265 + PSU savings
or
$175 off of the 2600k build other than that I don't know what else you could cut unless you went cheaper with the mobo or the GPU/ monitor

Looks good, but does it come with nVidia 3D glasses? If not, that's another $200 on my part, in which case my previous pick (ASUS VG236H) would be the more affordable of the two.

Also, thanks to everyone for your suggestions. You've helped me save $300. I have updated the wishlist in the OP, so you can look at that. Anything else I could cut?

We still don't know your budget. I mean I could cut that build by half and then some...but what's your intended budget? As far as the 3D kit...transmitter and glasses, enough dead weight can be cut off that build to pay for two sets of glasses and still save $$$.

mobo, RAM, gpu..the list goes on and on. In fact just changing those 580's that you have that list for $600 down to normal 580's that list for $500 is your $200 savings right there. Those 580's you have are 3gb cards that are meant for running tri monitors, not one single monitor...it's the entire reason they have 3gb of RAM.

Okay, I put the 1GB editions of the 580 on the wishlist. And about my budget: um... I don't really have a clear-cut budget, but under $2,500 is great. My updated wishlist is below that, but by all means, I'd love to save more if the performance is on-par with my current list.

Also, 3D requires the game to render double, doesn't it? So it has the same sort of graphical pull as dual-monitors?
