I just bought a 'new' PSU for my Gateway Performance 800 and am amazed at
how much it's cost me! As I live in the UK and Gateway are un the US now and
the only place to buy the PSU was from Skyline Engineering (US). The actual
PSU was £46 (UK), but the delivery was £52! To cap it all, I had to pay
another £23 in import duty!
£121 in total for a PSU! Unreal! I coulda bought one from Maplin in the UK
for about £20! :-(

The 'plot' thickens! I just installed the new PSU, and guess what? The
original 'fault' was still there! (The PC kept switching off after a few
seconds)....'it still does! ;o( Thanks Elektor and Metronid, I bought the
PSU on your advice. I've got the old PSU in again and I took out the
graphics card and reseated it. The machine seems to be working again, for
now anyway. Anyone in the market for a PSU? ;o)
Geo.

P.S.
Don't worry guys, I won't hold it against you.

Ouch! Yes, Skyline is always expensive. They stock exact original parts and
charge a premium price. Shipping cost sounds even more outrageous. Import duty
must have been based on the high purchase price. Sadly, the landed price paid
for the PSU exceeds the value of the entire system.

Often with Gateway systems, it is possible to replace a part with a non-Gateway
generic equivalent, and the system never misses a beat.

Skyline's business model is geared toward corporate customers with purchasing
officers who know little or nothing about computers and who pay the premium
price for the assurance that the Skyline part will work properly... Ben Myers
