I have recently bought the AMD Athlon 64 X2 5600+ 2.9 GHZ (AM2 Socket, 65W) CPU, it was an upgrade from my factory installed AMD Athlon Processor LE-1620. I wanted to get the AMD Athlon II X2 250 Processor to to have a better CPU than the 5600 i have now. My problem is that it is an AM3 Socket. From looking from a PC forum, many people confirmed that this is compatible for an AM2 socket. My motherboard is an ASUS: M2N61-AR, and supports only AM2 CPUs and up to 65 Watts in wattage.
Motherboard supports the following processor upgrades:

Athlon 64 X2 with Dual Core technology up to 65 Watt
Athlon 64 up to 65 Watt
Sempron up to 65 Watt

So can anyone tell me if the AMD Athlon II X2 250 Processor is right for me?

Solution
No. Not unless you get lucky and find someone who has tried it on your model board. Oem system boards aren't designed for upgrading. You answered your own question based on the available facts. You'll need a different board and possibly a new windows coa if you have the original windows installation, plus a newer power supply wouldn't hurt. Your original ps is probably 250w designed to be just adequate for what you are using now. I wouldn't put any more money into your system. Either use it for a spare or sell it intact.
