I'm looking for an x86 CPU (that I can still buy first-hand today) that isn't particularly fast by today's standards, but is a solid all-round performer (eg. it doesn't totally suck for FPU performance). It's not for games, just for general apps usage.

Also, its temp shouldn't go insane like most x86 CPUs do today (insane = >40C on idle, I'm living in the UK), and shouldn't need a noisy fan or a heatsink that outweighs the case 🙂

I have a feeling the processor I'm looking for doesn't exist right now.

Athlon XP 2500+ barton?
I heared it comes with a quiet fan
and since you don't need a top one, I guess this cpu would be enough?
or..buy some good cpu, and spend extra money to get WaterCooling..then it would be silent..lol

an X86 CPU that is not too many frills and whistles and quiet for little money. I say the AMD XP 1700+ and a MSI K7N2G. This will be an all around good solution for minimum price:

Athlon XP 1700+ 1.47Ghz SoA 36.50 (31.07 B4 VAT)

SoA nForce 2 ATX A V L
Mfr code: K7N2G-L 81.00 (68.94 B4 VAT)

The rest is up to you and your budget.

i think you are definatly in amd territory...get an nforce board with intigrated graphics...mainstream memory...a 1700 or a 2500 and then lightly overclock them...both should at least reach the performance of the 3000+ with the stock fan.

There is no smell better than fried silicon

Sounds like you need an XP 1700+. It´s very cheap, and still has very decent performance. Spend some money on a good silent cooler to go with the 1700+, instead of getting a high-end CPU.

I second Maverick494's recommendation, if you go with the on board video version of the board a full system becomes cheaper yet also! (The forum helped me scrape togeather a pretty nice one for just under 325$ a month or so back using a similar setup.) The 1700+ is very very overclockable too.
