CPU Cooling Problem

As I failed to install my Kraken x40 due to it not fitting (despite what every "expert" on this forum was saying) I have to resort to reapplying the thermal compound on the heatsink that came with the CPU.
Unfortunately, reapplying the thermal compound only improved the cooling by a whopping 3 degrees, and I need to know why.
I have an AMD Athlon x4 760k Richland with Arctic Silver 5 Thermal Compound. Is the heatsink only effective when it is mounted in a certain position? And did I possibly put too much thermal compound on? I'm just not sure anymore.
Please help, my frustration is above par and I am beginning to lose hope for this build. Wasting $900 isn't exactly fun for me, so help would be great. Thanks.

My motherboard didn't allow enough clerance for the radiator on the top 140mm fan mount, despite what others had told me. Thanks for the guide though, it helped. Temps dropped almost 10 degrees. Still is overheating, just because it is indeed a hot processor. Thanks though!
