The PC boots up and works fine. But the CPU fan keeps starting and stopping. So what's up with that? This didn't happen before. Now I'm worried that the processor might overheat.

It seems that the fan bearing is failing and you have to get a new CPU cooler or a new fan. Do a little test. Once the fan stops try to spin it yourself. If it turns on and after a while stops again, then the fan is failing and you have to get a new one. However there are some new CPU coolers that have fans that may stop during low temps and low CPU loads but these models are very few and you should already know if your CPU cooler has that feature. Therefore please post you complete system specs and especially the CPU cooler model. Good luck.

How have you configured the CPU_FAN header in BIOS Setup. One option on many mobos is a so-called "Quiet" profile to keep fan noise down. BUT what that really means is that the fan is fixed to run at a slow speed and much reduced cooling. In some situations that may result in the fan stalling and failing to re-start until something boosts its power setting. So, IF you have your CPU_FAN header set this way, change it back to normal automatic control.

On the other hand, if this is an older fan, it is quite possible that its bearings are wearing out and it needs replacement, as others have said.
