CPU fan on Sysfan header

Hi, My cpu fan does not work on my cpu fan header, not sure if it's because the header is faulty or the fan is a 3 pin. The computer boots up with no errors but the fan does not work.

I've been using the system fan header for the cpu fan and it boots up fine with no errors, but every once in awhile when I'm playing an intensive game the computer shuts down, then keeps shutting down until the computer cools down. I'm not sure if the shutting down has anything to do with the cpu fan or not. Am I not supposed to use the sys fan for the cpu? Is there something extra I should be doing or using?

My mobo is a msi 970a-g43, terrible mobo but the rest of the components in the pc are nice and new. The cpu fan is a Zalman CNPS 7500

Any help is greatly appreciated!

It's pretty important to have it plugged into the CPU header because it adjusts speeds based off the temperature of the CPU.
If it's not plugged in there, then it's not speeding up the fan to keep your CPU cool when temperatures rise. (Like in a game)

If the Header is toast, then I recommend hooking the fan into a fan controller and running it at 80-100% speed while gaming to keep the CPU temps down, or replace the motherboard all together and alleviate the problem. (which would be the safer route)

It does not matter if its 3-pin or 4-pin connector, the fan should work. And yes some motherboards have a safeguard that Shuts down the system and/or refuse to POST if you don't install anything in the CPU_Fan header. What exactly do you mean by 'until the computer cools down'? Are you monitoring CPU and/or GPU temps? If yes then your CPU might also be shutting down the system if its getting way too hot. In case of fan, try to install the connector properly and if it still does not work then that header might be dead.

In case of CPU, Reinstall the cooler properly with a Thermal Paste or Thermal Interface Material (this is important) and make sure the cooler is seated properly. Also check for dust in your PC as those are the worst and can also hinder the cooling performance

Ya the cpu fan does not work in the cpu fan header, most likely dead then. I reapplied new thermal compound just last week but it didn't fix it. No dust in the computer. The computer shuts down when I'm playing a game and it's graphically intensive. And occasionally in Ninjatrader, which can be a real pain.

The cpu does get up into the 70s sometimes playing games, but not always shuts down in the 70s and can shut down when it in the 50s occasionally. If I log right back into a game it will shut down again and keep shutting down. Need to let it cool down and rest before I can do anything.

The games I play are very intensive and make the cpu and gpu hot, but they can make most computers hot. I have the side open so I can feel the heat. I also use afterburner, and have also seen my gpu get up into the 80s occasionally.

The shutting down does somewhat correlate with the heat but not always and can shut down when the gpu and cpu are pretty cool. Never when I'm watching a movie though, just with Ninjatrader and games. I've reformatted my computer but that did not fix it.
