Question CPU fan randomly stops spinning ?

This has been going on for the past couple days now after I installed a new graphics card. When I am on my computer after a random amount of time the CPU fan just stops spinning. I have tried resetting CMOS, updating BIOS, I have tried with another fan and it doesn't work with that one either. Sometimes if I leave the PC shut off for a while it will spin again. If I turn it off and back on though it will not. I am thinking it is a motherboard problem. I am just running out of ideas here.

PC Specs
Motherboard: MSI Tomahawk Z690 WiFi
CPU: 12400f
GPU: 4070 Ti Super
RAM: 32GB Corsair Vengeance DDR4
PSU: Corsair RM750e, it's about a year old and I bought it brand new.
SSD1: Crucial BX500 1 TB with 230GB left
SSD 2: Crucial P5 Plus 1TB NVMe with 195GB left
OS: Windows 11

Update your post to include full system hardware specs and OS information.

Include PSU: make, model, wattage, age, condition (original to build, new, refurbished, used)?

Disk drive(s): make, model, capacity, how full?

Take a look in Reliability History/Monitor for any error codes, warnings, or even informational events that you can identify as being logged just before or at the time the CPU fan stops spinning.

There are other tools that can be used if that proves necessary.

You missed one of the most important things in your list. What cooler are you using.

What software if any are you using to control the fan speed.

You can load a free software called fan control. Maybe use it to over ride the cpu and set it to flat 100%. If it stops then you likely have a bad fan. Depends on the cooler most are pretty easy and cheap to replace.

my bad haha. it is the Deepcool AG500 BK ARGB. The only software I have is NZXT CAM and MSI Afterburner.

I checked reliability history and nothing to note pops up.

What you describe happens when that fan is sent signals that call for it to run too slowly so it stalls. Check these details.

1. The cooler fan must be connected to the mobo CPU_FAN header, not another.
2.For configuration items in the following for that CPU_FAN header, I presume you will use MSI Afterburner. Do NOT try to use NZXT CAM - it is customized for their hardware.
3. Go to the CPU_FAN header. Ensure it is set to use PWM MODE, not Voltage or DC or Auto.
4. What fan PROFILE are you using? Options normally are Default or Standard, Quiet, Turbo or Full Speed, sometimes a custom "fan curve". I think that MSI offers no "custom curve" but DOES allow you to alter the settings in its Default curve. For the lowest (or2 lowest) temperatures and speed settings, raise the lowest speed a bit and try it out. If it still stalls sometimes, come back and raise those settings again. Do NOT try to use Quiet for low noise - that is done ONLY by forcing the fan to run slow always.

You could connect the cpu fan to the pump_fan header, next to the cpu_fan header just for testing and watch if it spins up normally.

yeah i did that. it is working normally so far.

Ok, well maybe the other guys can input here. Maybe a faulty mobo header or profile/setting problem ?? Each mobo header has its own setup to communicate to the bios. Not all headers are entirely suitable for particular component/fans.

If it seems to work on a different connection then maybe things are fine. It could be a bad fan that just randomly fails for some reason. Some time fans have issue running a particular speeds.

The good thing about coolers like the one you have is you can swap the fan out without removing the cooler from the CPU. It uses the very standard 120mm fan. If you were desperate you could use one of you case fans. You would really want a fan designed for radiators and there is not much difference in price between case fans and radiator fans. They are all pretty cheap and you can use almost any brand. If you want fancy led then they can get expensive.
