Hey guys, i am looking for the minimum required/cheapest cpu that will run an r9 290 with bottlenecking it. I was looking at an i5 4460 which is around £140, but was hoping to find something around £100.
I'm not looking to change the graphics card as i am getting a good deal on it from a friend, but just out of curiosity would a r9 290 be hindered by an i3 4130? and by how much. Would you gain better performance from a cheaper gpu and an i5 (280x for example)
would overclocking a cheaper cpu stop bottlenecking?

Yes the 4170 is the best deal...

The i3 4160 will be the minimum i would go with.
Check the Bottlenecking Guide & Chart on the bottom right of this reply.

If you only plan to game then the i3 would be fine. If you want to do any sort of editing or muli-tasking then fx or i5 would be useful. In my opinion if you are gaming then grab the i3 with an h97 or z97 mobo and you can upgrade to i5 or i7 later if you need to.

The i3 4160 is a much better price : performance CPU.

I would personally go with the i3 4160 because you will be able to upgrade it to something very good later on, for example a i5 4690K.

The FX 8320 is a great CPU for the price & does multi threaded tasks better than the i3 4160, however the FX lineup is known to have fps drops issues more than the Intel counterparts. Also if you do not overclock the FX 8320, the per core performance of the i3 4160 would be far superior.

One more note is you need a decent motherboard for the FX 8320 & a cooler.

All in all the i3 4160 would be my choice.

Would i lose out on performance gaming wise? And if so by how much?

Wouldn't an i3 4170 be better as it only costs £5 more?

Yes the 4170 is the best deal right now.
