CPU FSB Help

I just upgraded from the 1.3 Ghz Athlon Duron to the Athlon XP 1800+. I have 384 MB of SDRAM 133. I have a couple issued I need resolving. First, I was able to set it to 133/133 when previously with the duron i could only do 100/100. I'm not totally clear about how FSB works, I believe with the XP 1800 + it can be 266mhz. Correct me if i'm wrong, but the type of ram figures into that, right? Since I only have the 133 SDRAM that would mean 133 FSB, correct? Well, either way it should be more that 66 which what it says when I was looking my stats displayed by futuremark after I used 3D Mark 2001 SE.

My second problem is less important, but annoying. My boot up time is horrible for my system. I've read from other people with similar systems that they boot anywhere from 20-40 seconds and people getting disgusted after 40 seconds. Well, my boot time is over 2 minutes. I run Windows XP pro and even messed with the system config to stop some programs from loading at startup. I even tried the program Bootvis, but when it boots back up and says its optimizing my system, it just sits there for several minutes and does nothing. i really hope the problem is with my hard drive, because that all I can come up with. any help will be greatly appreciated.

The Athlon XP 1800+ has a 133 MHz FSB (doubled to 266). Only Athlon XP 2600+'s and above come in 166 MHz FSB varieties (doubled to 333). You can try overclocking to a higher FSB, but if overclocking wasn't in mind you will need to stick with 133.

As far as your bootup time, what Hard Drive are you using? You said you eliminated some programs that start at bootup, what programs are left that still start?

Thanks for the quick response. 133 is what I thought, but have any idea why a benchmark would display 66? And is there any way I can see for sure what it is?

As for the programs, I have 1 program that I use for a periphial. The others are the sound manager, and about 3 others I can't figure out what they are, but from the location it looks like its windows related. I'm not at home right now so I can't really check.

I have a hard time believing that the FSB could be 66 for the CPU. What motherboard do you have? It could have a setting for 66 for the RAM, but you said you had it set to 133/133. I really don't know. Maybe someone else will have an idea.

It looks wrong to me as well, and is probably just being displayed wrong by futuremark. Anyone have an idea of a program, utility, or even something within windows that would show me what the FSB is actually at? Btw, I have an ECS K75SA.

download CPUID, this will give you an accurate picture of what is going on with the CPU and FSB. I have an XP 2000+ on XP Pro and my boot time is about 30 seconds, 20 if I remove my SCSI card. Yours should be around a similar mark but it does depend on what have installed and the speed of the hard drive. You could try defragging your hard drive. If it is under 20gig then it's likely to be ATA 33 and much slower than current models.


Never pay more that a hundred pound for a component. It just isn't worth it...
