Cpu high usage

The answer to your mystery should lie in the "processes" tab in your task manager. Depending upon what you've installed, it could be any number of background processes that are causing that CPU usage.

However, looking at your desktop I see that you have MalwareBytes installed... Which is apparently known to exhibit some very-high CPU usage situations. I've seen some suggestions this is a result of it interacting with your antivirus. If that's the case, it can be fixed without uninstalling either.

I don't see any processes that could really be hurting it though

Well, at the time that you took the screencaps... You were not having very high CPU usage at that moment. I'd recommend keeping an eye on them, perhaps sorted by CPU usage... Or to be honest, I find that using the Resource Monitor to yield easier results.

I also forgot to mention that I installed and ran malwaybytes after the problems started so I know that it's not the problem. Also, even though task manager indicated that the cpu has low usage, it's referring to overall usage. The cpu 0 usage was still crazy high.

Ah, so it's actually a lot of it being taken by System Interrupts... And on a fresh boot? Often, that's a sign of something else: often a driver issue... Often it's an audio driver, but may be other drivers, and from that alone I can't really tell you WHICH driver it'd be.

Yeah I considered that before I wiped the os. Just go through device manager and manually right click and check for updates right? I also I updated my bios, but all this was before the wipe. I'll go try it again because surely something is out of date.

To double-check and be even more certain, I might go through and temporarily outright DISABLE the devices to see if it has an impact. This would make it much easier to isolate which driver(s) are being problematic.

However, it is likely going to be easier, for now, to double-check through all the drivers and update them. The right-click check may not work consistently, (namely for third-party drivers, such as for the audio, or the video card) so I'd recommend going to each manufacturer's site and checking/downloading.

I went through and updated everything, and it was all up to date. As far as the audio goes, how do I update that any other way? I have tried removing my sound card to no avail, so I know its not causing any problems.

I just went to Realteks site and updated audio drivers, and I use geforce experience for my 780... I'm running out of ideas. I've also tried disabling all usb ports because that seems to be a common problem but again, it fixed nothing.

The only other option beyond drivers that I'm aware of so far is, potentially, another background process, such as Windows Defender.

In addition to simply checking to update many of these things, do go through and test what more you can to see how it reacts when disabled.

Yeah windows defender is already stopped... What else is there to update?

At this point, given I can't access the computer for myself, I can't say.

The next route on the audio part, however, would involve going through your audio settings and disabling all Windows sound effects and enhancements. To do so:

- Right-click the speaker icon in the system tray. (the one you normally click to access the volume slider)
- Click "Playback devices."
- Find the icon for the device that's the "Default" (it'll be the icon with a green checkmark in the corner) and double-click it.
- Click on the "enhancements" tab.
- Check the "disable all sound effects" box.
- Click "Apply" and close.

By this point I'm considering that the core might be failing in the cpu. Disabling sound effects didn't help anything, and I went through and disabled all services that could be and still have high usage. Any more ideas before I commit to buying a new cpu?

That does not seem to be the sort of symptoms of an actual failing CPU. At most, a failing diagnostic program: I am presuming that often, you ARE noticing the effect of this CPU usage, correct? (as in, it'd manifest as some intermittent stutter and lag and the like)

If Task Manager is identifying it as System Interrupts that are eating up all that power on Core #0, then it means that there is something running in conflict there, even if we've not found it yet. It's just that it gets uglier the further it goes. For instance, it could very well be that a driver is technically up-to-date... But corrupted.

This guide here happens to repeat a bit more of the same things I'd mentioned, but does cover some more.

In short, you will have to go through every running and installed program as well as driver, and likely uninstall most/all of them before you discover the one that's causing the trouble. If you replaced your CPU, you would pretty much certainly find yourself with the exact same situation.

Any idea which of these could be the problem?

Sorry for the multiple pictures I'm not sure if there is a better way to show you

The only thing that looks even slightly out of the ordinary is that System Restore appears to be making a number of reads and writes more often than usual. However, it is likely unrelated, given that overall it's a very small amount of bandwidth.

Beyond that, one further option is to make use of MSCONFIG.exe. (simply search for it in the Star menu) Disable ALL checkboxes on the startup tab.

So I have gone through every driver I could and uninstalled and reinstalled, and still came up with nothing. I thought to use command prompt to scan for any errors and came up with this, though I'm not sure what it means...

It wont let me paste the entire document on here because it is massive... and ideas?

open the document with notepad. click on edit -> find
look for keywords like
error
fail
not found

sfc /scannow found some something that wasnt right, we are trying to find out what. its in the logs.
also go ahead and review the windows system logs. under control panel -> administrative tools -> event viewer. open the system log, click on filter current log and select critical, error and warning.

There were several places where it said variations of this

those issue seems to be related to windows update, see link below

not sure if it has anything to do with your CPU usage.

process explorer can be useful in determining whats causing the CPU usage.

you mentioned clean install of windows in your first post but it seems like your system has a lot of software that should not be there after a clean install. you may wanna try formatting the hard drive and starting from scratch.

Yeah when I first installed the os I was still having the problem but by now I obviously have more on it because I use my pc every day. I just went through that whole command prompt ordeal that you linked me and came up short. What next?

Yeah I just did a fresh install (again) and wiped both drives this picture was the first thing done on the new os.
