What kind of CPU would be in a server? My dad might lend me his, it's about 5years old, what kind CPU would be expected in it?

Typically, you're looking at either an Intel Xeon or AMD Opteron, but in truth, a server can be run from any processor. I've run web servers in Pentium 4 processors and SQL servers on an Intel Core2Quad.

RAM, as ColGeek states, really depends on the intended usage. Web servers don't require a lot of RAM where as Exchange Mail servers (last I checked) were extreme RAM hogs.

The server was for used for business offices and such.

Could have been a file server, or something similar. Still no way to even guess.

You should know soon, I suppose. Good luck!

I actually hosted a webserver on a 486 clone (Cyrix) several years ago. It was to replace a failed Dell server and no one ever knew the difference.
