Approximate Purchase Date: This month (November 2024)
Budget Range: roughly $800
System Usage from Most to Least Important: Unreal Engine, coding, 3d rendering, some gaming
Are you buying a monitor: No
Parts to Upgrade: CPU/Motherboard/Ram
Preferred Website(s) for Parts: Amazon, NewEgg, MicroCenter
Location: Michigan
Parts Preferences: No preference
Overclocking: Maybe
SLI or Crossfire: No
Additional Comments: I would prefer air cooling. I have a Peerless Assassin I haven't used yet. I also have a 750w PSU, case, fans, ect
And Most Importantly, Why Are You Upgrading: Upgrading from an older Ryzen 3600 build that's not really suited for what I mainly use it for now.

Since I built my current PC several years ago I have gotten deep into Unreal Engine development as well as other cpu intensive tasks such as 3d rendering. I do some gaming of course but not a lot so if I had to choose between productivity and gaming, productivity easily wins.

My current specs are:
Ryzen 3600
B550 motherboard
1660 Super
32 GB ram

I’m considering a couple options, max out the AM4 or upgrade to AM5.

If I stay on AM4 I can upgrade to 5950x, 64 GB ram, get a decent GPU. If I went this route I am sure I will want to update sooner than I would like.

If I upgrade to AM5 I was looking at a few options:
7950x or 9900x or ? 9900x is currently $110 cheaper than the 7950x and the 9950x is roughly $100 more expensive as I check Amazon, Newegg and Microcenter today.
64 GB ram
Motherboard
Keep the 1660 super until launch of new GPU series beginning of next year sometime

In the long term upgrading to AM5 is more beneficial obviously but I’ll just have to wait on a GPU. Which CPU though, I’m sure any of the 12 and 16 core options are a significant boost over the 5950x.

As I am writing this to complicate my decision more I see there is a 7950x3D bundle at MicroCenter for $739 but only 32 GB ram. That is the price range I would like to hit though.

I’m looking more for best performance for the price than I am looking for top end unless the price makes sense.

Just for the sake of relevance;

B550 motherboard
B550 is the chipset, what is the make and model of your motherboard?
+
Make and model of your case and your PSU(and it's age)?

If you do decide to go with AM5, that your case supports ATX boards and your PSU isn't a bad quality unit then this;
