Hello all, I need some advice/help. I currently just built a new PC and having some overheating issues when playing heavier load games like Apex, GTFO, etc. I’ll end up throttling and everything crashes. It isn’t allowing me to play any of the good good games with friends… Normal browsing temps are around 30-40 C. Rocket league gives me around 50ish. Everything else doesn’t seem out of the ordinary until I play a heavier game. I have proper cooling which is making me think it could potentially be an improper thermal paste job or some contact issue. Could anybody point me in the right direction?

Specs: i7 14700k, 7900 XTX, MSI Z790 Gaming Pro inside of a NZXT H9 Elite with 10 total fans. 6 in 4 out.

What is your CPU cooler?

What is the make/model of the rest of your specs?
In particular the psu, case and cpu cooler.
Normal operation of a 14700K when throttled is to continue to run using a lower clock rate, not to crash.

The power requirements of a 7900XTX are considerable. Here is a recommendation chart.
Insufficient power to handle graphics peaks is a more likely reason for a crash.

few things
what cooler are you using on the cpu ?
what resolution are you play said games at ?

My 7800x3d idles at around 45 to 50c using a a thermalright phantom spirit 120 evo ( so a dual tower air cooler) it will hit 80 c R23 all core but in games and depending on game and resolution played it hovers around the 64c

i live in a hotter climate and its summer right now so weather is warmer ..

unless your hitting 100c under load in games ( then thats a issue ) anywhere from 50 to 80c is fine under heavy load

my 7900xtx red devil is a 900w recommendation so personally i would go a 1000w min with any 7900xtx to take into account more power hungry CPU's power spikes etc etc
I know there are lower 2 plug versions of the 7900xtx but never hurts to over kill

I have a 1000 W PSU.

1000W PSU, NZXT H9 Elite and DeepCool AG620.

and,
what are the temperature ranges when you think the system is getting too warm?
are you watching them live as you play, looking back at logs, etc..?
you have never stated what temperatures you're actually reaching that you believe are the source of your issues.
or how you are monitoring them.

have a 1000 W PSU
not that this has anything to do with your possible overheating but "1000w" means nothing.
there are thousands of models of power supplies available and a good number of them are not worth using.

Corsair RMx Series. 21’ model. My temps will reach about 80-85 and throttle with these higher graphic games like the games I mentioned. Around 80 basically is where it happened and I’m monitoring it through MSI’s application in real time as i’m playing the games.

The temperatures do seem a bit high as gaming rarely puts a real load on. It might be worth running something like Cinebench/OCCT/Blender which targets the CPU to see if that replicates any behavior.

That being said 80-85c isn't enough to throttle unless you've set your BIOS to a temperature limited boost setting.

What exactly is leading you to believe this is throttling? Do the clockspeeds drop? Have you used HWMonitor/HWInfo/Throttlestop to verify behavior?

I have not touched any bios settings. I am new to this too so I am not too sure what to look for or change. What would be the specific setting to change it so I am not throttling around those temps? And to answer your other question. I do not know. I am new and I assumed it was throttling but I am not certain. I haven’t used any of those to verify the behavior but I will certainly monitor it.

If you haven't touched the BIOS it isn't throttling and something else is going on. MSI doesn't put any limits on the CPU by default so your temperatures would be much higher.

Sounds like you may have some sort of system instability going on.

What exactly is happening when these issues arise? Is it stuttering/lagging?

You mentioned in your OP that there was crashing does this happen all of the time? Also is it a full system crash or is it just the game itself?

What is the exact model of your storage and DRAM?

When this happens, my whole game crashes as well as most all of the applications I have running which can include discord, spotify, etc. Pretty sure it’s a full system crash. I have both a 1tb and 2tb samsung 990 PRO ssd with 32 gigs of G.Skill Trident Z5.

If windows doesn't crash that sounds like either DRAM or a graphics driver crash. Does anything show up in the windows event viewer or is any error messaging popping up?

What speed is the DRAM?

You can check how the DRAM is running and what it's rated for with CPU-Z if you don't know without looking it up. The SPD tab shows what the DRAM is rated for and the Memory tab shows what it's currently running at.

Let me check and I’ll get back to you!

It says my DRAM is running at 6000MHz.

Any other idea?
