CPU Temp ~99C. CANNOT Bring it Down. HELP!

I have been having this problem for as long as I can remember. I cannot get my CPU temps lower than 98F. I've even replaced my cooling system from an H60 to just a regular Hyper 212 EVO.

I'm at the point now where is it possible I just fried my CPU and now it won't stay at cooler temps, or is that impossible? I have no idea what to do.

The hyper 212 evo is more than enough for that cpu at stock clocks. To be seeing temps like that I would assume you did not mount the cooler properly or didn't apply any thermal paste at all. I would also try HWmonitor instead of speccy or whatever that is, in case its not reading the temps properly.

I've gone through two coolers now, both with the same exact problem. H60 liquid cooling and now this. I'm pretty confident I mounted it correctly. Fans are blowing and there is definitely power to it. I also did apply thermal paste, both times. Ok, I'll post back with the HWmonitor results.

What is the core voltage? 1.3 volts should be about the max on air cooling.

Many motherboards set the core voltage very high on K series CPUs.

A decent air cooler is plenty enough to cool an i7 4790k at stock speeds, as was the AiO liquid cooler you had before. As has been suggested before, open the case up and turn on the pc. Make sure your fans are spinning up(Case fans AND especially cooler fans). Blow out the dust(if any) using a can of compressed air.

I wouldn't leave the case panel off, because it can actually cause the cpu to warm up because with the panel on, a proper cooling setup will intake air from the front and sides and exhaust it out the top and top back. This is airlow, but with the panel off, you don't have that. Of course, you could go overkill and just put a box fan blowing into it with the side panel off too.

Double check the mounting of the cooler(thermal paste, and proper tightness to the cpu itself). What case do you have, and how many case fans? Also, what is your ambient temperature?

I actually do run the PC with the one case side off. However, before I did that, I had the same problems. I have a NZXT case (can't remember the specific model). I have one case fan on the top. It currently has no power (not sure why, I'll try and get that sorted) however again, when that was working before, I still had the same issues.

also check temperatures with another software just in case, dont leave it running for long time, these temps are damn high.
If u did any overclocking, bring it down to default.

Well your voltage readings are weird, these offset... Go to bios and put it into default

Hmm, the LLC offset seems high. +.307 volts on top of stock voltage would be huge.

Have you gone into the BIOS and reset to defaults? Updated the BIOS?

The BIOS has always given me trouble. I have no idea how to update the BIOS. I can try finding a reset to default option or something in there however.

You dont need to update, it wont fix temperatures... Just reset clock to default, there should be a hot key for it in bios, or just reset cmos/jumper right on your motherboard.

Load bios defaults or possible even optimized defaults, usually in the save and exit menu, you CPU will defiantly be thermal throttling at those temps, I wouldn't even turn my computer on if I was hitting those temps until I sorted it, what motherboard ?, worst case scenario, in case its auto overclocking, set CPU multiplier to 38 manually and set CPU voltage to 1.2v everything else to normal NOT auto, and memory to XMP profile 1.

What is your motherboard? Did u build you computer by yourself? Did you do anything in bios yourself? Did u use any overclocking software in OS?

Alright guys, so I've managed to bring down the temperatures to around 70-80C. Is this acceptable?

It was the classic, tons of pet hair and dust lodged in the CPU cooling fan. Dumb mistake.

Here's where I'm at now. My question other than my temperatures is, should I be changing that LLC offset you guys mentioned?

I was running 4.3Ghz off of 1.29 volts with the slightly older 4770k. You should be staying under 1.35 at the least, but likely you don't need more than 1.3 to make that CPU run at maximum boost.

Yes, 1.392 is why you are still seeing such high temperatures. Upper end of the safe range for air cooling.

You should be able to lower that quite a bit.

Alright. I went in the BIOS and set everything to normal (was on auto).

How we looking now captain?

No problem.

As long as it is stable, it should still boost up to 4.4Ghz and the CPU will last a lot longer this way.
