CPU upgrade compatibility

Ok guys I'm really confused here... I have a gateway ma7 ml6230 laptop with a Celeron M 1.6 ghz 520 processor that uses a PPGA478 socket. I just so happened to have a Intel Core 2 Duo 2.0 ghz t6400 processor that uses a PGA478 socket. Can I use the Core 2 Duo in this laptop?

The Core 2 Duo fits just fine in the machine but when I start it up the fan just goes full speed then slows down over and over and nothing comes on the screen. I put the Celeron back in and its fine... any advice here? Im confused as to why it doesnt work...

It will depend on the mobo, there was an update required to cope with a different voltage that the core 2's required, but otherwise it was the same socket.

where can I find that update?? How do i figure this out?

run cpu-z, tell us what it tells you about your mobo. The update is not 'gettable' it was a later generation of 775 and 478 boards, starting with the 965 chipset I think for 775.
