My current PC specs:
  • Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z97X-Gaming 3
  • RAM: Kingston HyperX SAVAGE 4x8GB 2400Mhz
  • CPU: Intel Core i5-4690K
  • GPU: MSI GTX 1080 Ti Gaming X
  • SSD: Kingston v300 240GB
  • HDD: Western Digital WD20EURX 2TB
  • PSU: Corsair RMi RM1000i 1000W
  • CPU Cooler: Raijintek THEMIS Evo
  • Case: Antec Nine Hundred Two
I feel like its time to finally upgrade my cpu, few months ago i freshly installed tiny10, but performance of my pc didnt improve much, things just seems so laggy, even playing league of legends sometimes drops below 100 fps(my monitor has 165 hz), so yeah im here to ask for budged upgrade to cpu suggestions, since im out of the loop for years now, and have no idea whats good whats bad whats new whats worth the price etc.

I'm aware that most likelly i need new motherboard for new cpu socket and ddr4 ram for the upgrade, but yeah im looking for something budget and would +/- match my gpu, or if price doesnt increase by much, maybe even something stronger that could be sufficient for maybe an gpu upgrade down the line, but last time i checked 1080ti is supposedly a very strong card, so if you do upgrade it, you go for the big expensive boys which also gonna require pricier cpu. If you can reccomend a cpu+motherboard+ram combo(if its as necesarry as i think it is) its even better. Btw i live in europe if that matters.

Yeah thats what i expected. Any suggestions for that?
if you can do it well
In another case, I would keep these and sell the rest, taking respectively AM4 and as cheap as possible, even used ones from someone who has changed platforms

I didnt quite catch it, whats am4? And why would i need to change the case too? Im quite out of the loop of this kind of stuff, after getting this pc all those years ago with time passage i kinda lost interest in these kind of IT news.

The hyperthreading from an i7 4790/k can help smooth out performance a lot and may solve the issue. It may be worth a try to upgrade to one and see if it fixes your problems because they are very inexpensive now.

Certainly upgrading the of a newer processor would yield you considerably more performance than anything available with your current motherboard.

What is your budget for this upgrade (in local currency)? And what country in Europe are you shopping in? Will help us to see what your options are and make a recommendation.

You can often find some good deals on AMD's 5700x or 5700x3d right now, and on 12th gen Intel.
I told him this before as a second solution, but he doesn't know what AM4 is
He has a 1080 card and a 1000 watt power supply, but he doesn't know ........ the friend is making fun of us all

That's why I said specific processors, instead of socket names. Socket names can be confusing, but in general people will be more familiar with specific processor names.

Im from lithuania, but i have no problems shipping from somewhere else, if i can find it significantly cheaper, like for example germany amazon ships here. I was thinking about 200-300euro for cpu+motherboard+ram. Maaybe i could push it to 400 if necesarry.

5700x3d combo. I put your case in there, to ensure I had compatibility for the CPU cooling.

While doing my own research, ive seen people recommending 5600 a lot. i checked on user benchmark comparison between 5600 and 5700x3d and to my uneducated eye it seems they are pretty identical, 5600 even faster at single and duo core tasks. What would be the reasons to go for twice as expensive 5700x3d?

First off Userbenchmark is trash, and has been for quite some time. They are heavily anti AMD biased, but also make insane decisions even on Intel platforms on what is better, like trying to state an i3 8100 was a better gaming chip than an i9 9980xe, because clock speed was higher on the i3.

The 5700x3d is the second fastest gaming CPU on AM4, with the 5800x3d being top. Six cores is quickly becoming insufficient for a gaming rig too. Games are becoming more CPU heavy, and you still need to have enough cores/threads for windows, web browsers and such.

5700x3d owner here. Phenomenal processor, and unbeatable value right now.

This bumps the CPU down to a 5800x. Right now it's cheaper than the regular 5700x (non 3d) and only about 30 euro more than the 5600, which is absolutely worth spending. The 5600 is still a very good processor that's a large upgrade, but at the current prices a Ryzen 7 is a better choice.

Here is a cheaper alternative. Goes with a 12400f, which is still a huge upgrade form where you're at now, but the CPU is slower than a 5700x3d or 5800x. Opts to use the stock cooler for cost savings, but it won't be cool or quiet.

No matter which option you choose, a very quick way to save some money to get you closer to what you want to spend is to go with a micro ATX motherboard. You can still install it in your case, but it will look a little funny and those cheap boards may compromise on features.
